Hello,
Before sending this Hijackthis, I have done the steps the site has advised me to. I have downloaded AdwareAlert, Spybot Search and Destroy and done the diskclean up and use my Mcafee antivirus up-to-date and as well used the McAffee Stg 260, but still the matter persists.
What is the matter:
I have fake taskbars telling me I need to buy Spydawn to get rid of all spyware, I have windows popping up every now and then for advertisement abt antispyware. Everytime i click on a link , it redirects me to another site: generally adware or antispyware.
I have found some explanations on the site but it looks to me a bit complex to deal with. So to be certain, I'd rather send you first the hijackthis to see if I have clearly identify the matter.

Hello Ibiboy,

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you.

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hello Ibiboy,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program.
If it asks to reboot, do not reboot. It is not necessary to reboot to get the items to show up in HijackThis.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it.

Hello Ibiboy,

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it.
Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.

You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts.
Afterwards, HijackThis will launch.

Please click Scan, and check the following items:

O16 - DPF: {0594AF7E-573B-40DF-8165-E47AB2EAEFE8} - http://akamai.downloadv3.com/binaries/P2EC..._1015_EN_XP.cab

Click Fix Checked.
Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, a new HijackThis log and tell me how your computer is running.

Hi Ibiboy,

I see you have Viewpoint Manager installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htm

I suggest you remove the program now.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
Viewpoint Toolbar

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key. If that does not work this go to this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

O16 - DPF: PackageHtmlCab - http://acces.blonde.com/package/PackageHtmlCab.CAB
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{39734D6F-9CB7-4CA6-85B0-BC510D474AB1}: NameServer = 85.255.116.158 85.255.112.181

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office startup assistant. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources.)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

Do not use the "Issues" block . It's meant for professionals.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot to the Normal Mode , post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hello Sifumike,
Here we go with the next step which I have to say was a bit more tricky.
Indeed, I followed the steps abt CCleaner as specified in your e-mail, and reboot in Safe mode, run Hijack this, though, the only line i could not delete cause not present is the following:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{39734D6F-9CB7-4CA6-85B0-BC510D474AB1}: NameServer = 85.255.116.158 85.255.112.181
All the others could have been done-))
When I reboot into normal mode and run Hijack you will see that a 017 line appears again and I guarrantee not present in safemode:

Moreover, everytime I reboot to normal mode, I have a window appearing from System Configuration Utility asking me to choose the normal setup mode(which I did)on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changes I made using the System Configuration Utility.
Then, when I click OK, I have to choose from the General Tab (of the Sytem Config Utility) between:
Normal Set up
Diagnostic Start up
Selective Start up
I choose Normal set up and it reboots hereagain. Can you advise if this procedure is right?

Many thanks in advance

Hello Ibiboy,

Yes, that is correct. Normal Setup is the one you want.

Looks like that O17 is being sticky.

In Normal Mode, select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{39734D6F-9CB7-4CA6-85B0-BC510D474AB1}: NameServer = 85.255.116.158 85.255.112.181

Reboot your computer.

Post a fresh Hijackthis log and let's see how it looks.

Hello SifuMike,
Well, you are not going to believe who is back after reboot?
Yeah 017 is very stubborn apparently.

Before I post you the HijackThis, can you let me know as well about 020? Can this one be something to get rid of as well?

Hello Ibiboy,

The common reason Hijackthis does not removing items is that all windows are not closed. That means closing all browser and explorer windows before you select "fix.” If you leave any open then the fix will not work.

So try to fix the sticky O17 again in the Normal Mode (making sure you closed all browser and explorer windows). Then reboot your computer

If it is still there, then try fixing it in the Safe Mode. Then reboot your computer.

If still there, post back a fresh Hijackthis log log and we will try something else.

can you let me know as well about 020? Can this one be something to get rid of as well?

No, that is not malware. It is Windows Genuine Advantage. You need that to do Window updates.

you have asked some time ago how my PC is running? Slow, very slow, and this for everything: To open an excel doc, word doc, to open files from C drive, the internet explorer takes time before opening any page; and to shut down or launch the PC, there is sufficient time to make tea-))

That does sounds slow.
This is a very commone complaint. Sometimes it is caused by malware, your HJT log looks clean.

Lets run some more scans to make sure all the malware is gone. :flowers:

Disable your antivirus program and go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan". This scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune DO NOT run it yet.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (formerly Ewido)
This is a 30 day trial of the program

AVG Anti-Spyware is designed to be used to both scan for and remove malicious files and also to run in real-time alongside, but not replace, your existing anti-virus program to give an added layer of protection.
Both the Resident Shield and Automatic Updates will only be available for the thirty day trial period, after that AVG Anti-Spyware will revert to a stand-alone scanner which you can keep and manually update for free and use in a similar way to Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D etc.

1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept the default installation path: C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. You can select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Sheild' and 'Automatic Updates'. If you choose to do this, then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
7. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
8. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method so Windows will start with minimal drivers and running processes.

2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.

4. IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.

Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
(1)
, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
(2) At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button.
(3) When done, click the Save Scan Report button.
(4) Click the Save Report as button.
Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt.
Save to your desktop.
A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

Reboot to Normal Mode.

Run FixWareout again

make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt).

When done, submit, the report.txt from FixWareout, the BitDefender log, the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 log and a fresh Hijackthis log.

You have many processes running a startup, each using some memory. You will have to look at each one and decide which one you do not need running at startup.

I am going to refer to this site on [b]Slow Computer?
http://www.security-forums.com/viewtopic.p...849b4433c95c095
as it will walk you through the process of speeding up your computer.

Hello Sifumike,
well, this took me some more time to do. But at the end I have gone through with your directions except for one thing I could not do:
With AVG anti spyware I had to
Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
(1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
I could not change and even from the popup menu> Will there be any consequences?

Hereunder in the following order, the report.txt from FixWareout, the BitDefender log, the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 log and a fresh Hijackthis log.

Hello again Sifumike,
I forgot to ask you abt something else: between all the programs I had to download would you recommend to keep them all or I can already get rid of some?

Furthermore, have you noticed from lates HijackThis log: 017 is back!

Regards

Hi Ibiboy,

I forgot to ask you abt something else: between all the programs I had to download would you recommend to keep them all or I can already get rid of some?

We will remove most of the programs I had you download when we are finished cleaning. Some you probably want to keep. CCleaner and AFT Cleaner both do the same thing (temp files), so you should make a choice as to which one you like.

AVG antispyware found some spyware reminents and BitDefender online scan found nothing.

Furthermore, have you noticed from lates HijackThis log: 017 is back!

I think it is a DNS problem.

Go to Start > Control Panel, double click on Network Connections
Right click the default connection and select: Properties
(For Cable or DSL, right-click: Local Area Connection )

In the Properties box,
Under: This connection uses the following items
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item

Is the following checked?:
Obtain DNS servers automatically

If it is not checked, and there are other settings, write them down in case you need to change them back to what they were.
Then, check: Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to go out of the Properties screens

Reboot if it prompts to do so, if not, reboot manually

********************

Run HijackThis, post a new log, and lets see if the 017 entry is gone. :flowers:

********************

Sometimes a bad DNS entry is cached...

To get rid of it, go to Start > Run, and type in: cmd
Press: Enter after the above, and after every command below:
At the prompt, type in: cd\
At C:\> type in:
ipconfig /flushdns

Click: OK

or, take a look at what is in there...

Go to Start > Run, and type in: cmd
Press: Enter after the above, and after every command below:
At the prompt, type in: cd\
At C:\> type in:
ipconfig /displaydns

Type: Exit to go out of the Command prompt

Let me know!
