Just noticed AVG is reporting the "CHANGE" result for Shell32.dll , system has been hanging up at certain times (ITunes takes forever to load, Disk Defragmenter will open but hang up and it seems impossible to run), don't know if it is related at all but I also have an extra "SCSI CdRom Device" under hardware that I am curious about. Do not know if it is related at all, help would be MUCH appreciated, HijackThis log below, thanks....

I apologize, I just remembered that I have to move HijackThis into its own folder in "Program Files", which I did not do prior to the scan above. I do not know if it really mattered but I have now moved it to its own folder and have rescanned, the new log is below, thanks again, any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!

Hi,

First of all, I notice from your log that you are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled. McAfee and AVG.
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown. No wonder your system hangs.

I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!
If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed,
you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

Just noticed AVG is reporting the "CHANGE" result for Shell32.dll

Don't worry about that. Read here:
http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?8,50941,50949

don't know if it is related at all but I also have an extra "SCSI CdRom Device" under hardware that I am curious about.

Don't worry here either. Some tools do create this, for example Daemons home, Nero... and in your case it's most probably created by MediaFour MacDrive for Windows.

In anyway, I can't see anything suspicious in your log.

thank you very much for your quick reply, everything that you said seems to make sense (I did once install Macdrive but no longer have it, is it necesarry/possible to remove that extra, unneeded drive?) What is most important is that nothing looks overly suspicious in my log, I was happy to hear that.

I would now ask how you would recommend dealing with the 2 anti-virus issue. Mcafee came on my computer/with AOL and I have had it since the beginning, I recently downloaded AVG because I was reocmmended it. I know it is probably just a matter of preference, but I am sure that one is probably more effective than the other when it comes to the real-time protection. Basically, would you recommend UNINSTALLING mcafee or AVG or just turning the auto-protect off on one of them? Is this the problem you think is responsible for Itunes and Disk Defragmenter starting slow (have not noticed such a slowdown in other programs) ? Please advise, thanks again.

Hi,

I did once install Macdrive but no longer have it, is it necesarry/possible to remove that extra, unneeded drive?

No, because as I said, Macdrive could create this, but you may have other software as well installed here which may create this, for example your Creative Labs - Creative CD access. So just leave that.

Concerning your Antivirus, it's indeed a matter of preference. Both are OK. McAfee may slow down the system a bit more though.
Turning the auto protect off on one of them doesn't make sense, since some related components are still loaded. As I already said, more than one Antivirus is not compatible. Some Antivirus software, when you install it, they display an alert and ask to uninstall any other Antivirus if present. This is with a reason they are alerting you, since more than one present can cause a lot of problems.

Yes, it could be the cause of your Itunes and disk fragmenter starting slow.
Anyway, if your disk haven't been defragmented in a long time, it is normal that defragmenting will be slow. In such cases, I recommend to defragment in Windows safe mode to improve its speed. This because in Windows safe mode, no extra programs are loaded.

Again, thanks for your reply. Just to clarify, do people strictly use AVG as their only anti-virus? For some reason I think of Mcafee as a more overall virus protection software but I may be totally off base with this one. When I installed AVG, I thought of it as more of an extra that would just help to catch things Mcafee didn't. Obviously I know now that this is not the case and the two can actually cause problems. One further question, becaue Mcafee is running in the AOL security center along with the AOL firewall (my firewall), does it make the most sense to just uninstall AVG? I do not know how I would go about just installing the anti-virus portion of the AOL Security software.

Just to clarify one further point, I never was even able to click "Defragment now" on Disk Defrag because the window would freeze up/hang and cause my whole system to slow down a lot overall. This is when I really began to suspect something was wrong because I understand that disk defrag can take awhile, I have done it many times before and have noticed that it helped greatly. Thanks again for all your help, if you can advise me at all further it would be apprecaited, cheers.

Yes, at least, they are supposed to.
Yes, in your case, it may be better to keep McAfee and uninstall AVG.

When having problems with defragging, just do it in Windows safe mode.
Also, it's a good idea to click the "analyse" button fisrt before you defragment.
