My Husband opened an Email that instructed him to update 'Quick Time'. He, so trusting, clicked this. Ever since we have a Blinking Yellow Exclemation Point in the Tray, a Windows Pop-Up that tells us we have Malware (obviously it IS the Malware), Then every minute or so Internet Explores logs itself on and tries to connect to some internet page //www.onlinestability.com//. I am not sure what Virus it is so am havig no luck doing searchs on it.

I did the 'pre' stuff from the preperation page (Ad-aware, Spy-bot etc). I do still need to update my Internet Explore. Norton comes back Clean, Stinger and HouseCall came back clean. But, I still have the issue.

Here is the HijackThis log

Hello,

My Husband opened an Email that instructed him to update 'Quick Time'

When updates are send via mail, never trust this, because as you've noticed, this was a malware installer.

Your Hijackthislog is incomplete. I am missing the bottom part.

Also, you didn't unzip/extract hijackthis.. and it's still in the tempfolder.
So I strongly advise to unzip/extract hijackthis.zip.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Create a permanent folder and move hijackthis.exe into it. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted.
How do you make a permanent folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files.
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

And as an extra instruction, Can you rename Hijackthis.exe to Analyse.exe
Then scan with Analyse.exe and post the log in your next reply (which will be a hijackthislog ofcourse)

Hello,

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap

Is this System Alert still present?

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Explorer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\shellexp.exe en

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then, * Download reglooks from here and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick reglooks.exe and wait until a logfile appears.
The log will be called result.txt.
Copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new Hijackthislog. It could be possible that both logs won't fit in one reply, so use two replies instead.

Yes, the problem still exists.
I downloaded reglooks as suggested but when I double-click to run it gets an error and shuts itself down (similar to IE type error). Here is the latest HijackthisLog.

Hi,

This log looks clean though.. can you try reglooks again please? But before you do, move it from your desktop to your C:\

Also do next:

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found - if found, so don't worry it tells that there were no files found.
In case hidden files were found, Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply as well.

Good to hear.. Just perform an extra scan with your antivirus (make sure the databases are updated), to get rid of the leftovers if still present.

Glad I could help.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Happy Surfing again!

Thread reopened.

Please perform next steps..

* Download reglooks from here and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick reglooks.exe and wait until a logfile appears.
The log will be called result.txt.
Copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply together with the blacklight log and a new Hijackthislog

I ran Blacklight (a few times) but the only file that was returned was mslog. At the time I did not save the info. The PC with the Virus is at Home and I am at work now. I can get you this info tonight.

Thanks for helping me again, this one is killing me!!!

Hi,

Well, your Hijackthislog looks different from the first one you posted.
So most probably you already checked and fixed in HijackThis before and that's why it didn't show previously with what you were exactly dealing.
Now it is clear with what you are dealing...

It's better to print out the next instructions or save it in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\Run]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

* Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1da7dbe8-c51b-4ae4-bc6e-21863349b0b4} - C:\Program Files\IntCodec\isaddon.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: VPNS System - {A5845A98-EBDA-4670-9DE6-5201C506E741} - C:\WINDOWS\iedrives.dll (file missing)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\mslog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\msdrv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\iedrives.dll
C:\\WINDOWS\msdrvctrl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdrives <== folder

Also search if mslogger.exe is present and delete it. Most probably also present in your C:\Windows-folder

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

sc delete driverpp Hit enter

* Still in safe mode... * Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Still in Safe Mode,

* Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

(Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background and set it blank again. But you can reapply your desktop background again afterwards

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process.

Post the contents of the smitfraudfix-log (C:\rapport.txt) together a new HiJackThis log in your next reply.

Hi,

The logs look clean again.

I am a bit wary after the last time I celebrated too soon.

Yes, but last time, I posted instructions and you said that after reboot it was gone and never proceeded with instructions anymore.
Anyway, I am sure it is gone now though, since we removed the related files/folder and keys :flowers:

Reboot once again, surf a bit and post back in a day how things are now.
