After finding lyrics to "O Christmas Tree" on the internet for my 3 year old, I have been plagued with the never ending question "Do you wish to watch a news video?" The first time, I actually told it NO, and it proceeded to install a bunch of CRAP on my computer, which I immediately uninstalled as best I could. I scanned with PestPatrol and enabled Active Protection. Now I cannot open IE without that question, and when I end task on it, still no IE. How do I get rid of it???

Here is my HijackThis log.

I would like to have you scan with Adaware SE 1.05 and Spybot 1.3 to see what they can remove.

Download, run, and configure Adaware

Download Ad-aware SE from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:

* Automatically save log-file
* Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
* Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :

* Scan Within Archives
* Scan Active Processes
* Scan Registry
* Deep Scan Registry
* Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
* Scan my Hosts file
* Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
* All of your hard drives

Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:

* Include additional process information
* Include additional file information
* Include environment information

Click the Tweak button and select:

* Under the Scanning Engine:
o Unload recognized processes & modules during scan
o Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
* Under the Cleaning Engine:
o Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click on Proceed to save the settings.

Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:

* Use Custom Scanning Options

Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Reboot your computer.

Next, scan with Spybot Search and Destroy: (Note: Please do not enable Spybot's 'Teatimer' function, as it can interfere with our fix. We'll enable it later.)

1. Download the latest version of Spybot from either:
* http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
* http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html
2. Install spybot and by default is should install into C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy.
3. Run Spybot by clicking on "Start" => "Programs" => "Spybot - Search & Destroy" => "Spybot - Search & Destroy".
4. The first time you run it, allow it to create a backup of your registry when prompted. This will take a few minutes to complete.
5. Click on "Search for Updates".
6. If any updates are found, place a check mark next to each and click on "Download Updates".
7. Click on "Immunize" and once it detect what has or has not been blocked, block all remaining items by clicking on the green plus sign next to immunize at the top.
8. Click on "Search & Destroy" => "Check for Problems".
9. If any problems are found, be sure to click on "Fix Selected Problems."

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

I downloaded Adaware SE, installed it, and all 3 times I have tried the scan, it runs for about 5 seconds then I get an error "Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher serverice terminated unexpectedly," and the system reboots.

This doesn't look good. :-(

Please start Ad Aware SE, click on the gear to access the Configuration Menu. Click on Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion". Click OK.

Were you able to scan with Spybot?

Please post a new hijackthis log.

After my last post, I tried spybot first, and it ran. I then ran adaware with your suggestion and it ran as well. Here is my new HJT log.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

You did a good job! Your log is clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

    You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

    Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

    Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you! I will go through all of your recommendations to prevent this from happening again.

I still have one more issue with this computer and I don't know if it's related to these other problems or not. Just after logging in after a fresh reboot, I get an error "Rpc Locator encountered a problem and needed to close." and it gives the standard option to send an error report to Microsoft. I noticed this for the first time after I installed SP2. Could this issue be related to my prior problem? Any ideas?

I can't find any specific information on that error. Try running Adaware again and then post a new hijackthis log so I can take one more look.

Adaware came up with no critical items, only 38 negligible items which I did not remove. Here's a new log:

Your log looks ok to me. Are you having any other problem outside of that error message on bootup?

If you haven't done so already you may want to run an online virus scan or two.

Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

That's the only problem I'm having at this time. I've run a virus scan several times in the last few days. I use Computer Associates eTrust v7.0 and I have all the latest updates and signatures. I'm scanning all drives as well as the memory.

I'll keep working on it. I'm glad it doesn't still look like reminants of the previous problem are lingering.

Thank you for all of your help. You truly saved my day!!!
