Hi,

By mistake I ran an exe file downloaded from an internet site on my laptop. My AV had expired at that time and I didn't knew about this. I had no spyware running at that time. Later on realizing the mistake, I updated my AV and also installed spybot. They detected some spywares and trojans and also removed them. Even after that I saw some unknown processes running after system startup. I got to the location of these executables and deleted them, after confirming their modification timestamp, from c:\windows\system32. I also saw kernels88.exe running and after some googling found that its a spyware. and hence cleanedup the registry and removed the exe file as described on some AV site.

Now my system is cleaned up (AFAIK). But my windows OS (XP home) still warns me of some spyware infection. Can you help me ? The logfiles is pasted below. Thanks.

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.
Please move HijackThis to a permanent folder. Anywhere is fine, other than your Desktop or a temporary folder. If it is in one of these locations, there is a risk that you may accidentally delete the backups; which may be needed if we fix something we're not meant to.
If you use Windows XP it may be that you just double clicked on the HijackThis.exe file, but this only extracts the file to a temporary folder. If you right click on it and select Extract, you can choose a folder to place it in.

How to make a permanent folder:
Click Start | My Computer | Local Disk (C: ) | Program Files.
In the menu bar at the top, go to File | New | Folder.
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HijackThis". You have now created C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Now get your HijackThis.exe file and place it in your folder.

You appear to have used MSConfig to disable some programs from starting up.
This can be bad if they are malware; I will not know what other things are hiding in your computer that you have disabled.
Go to Start | Run, type msconfig | OK
When the window opens click on the Startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks next to all entries.
Then press OK until you are out of the program.
If it asks to reboot, let it.

If you are pleased with the service I have offered, you may like to consider making a donation. Posted Image

Hi Charles,

Thanks for taking up my case.
I have created a permanent folder c:\Program Files\HijackThis and ran the hijackthis from this directory.
Logs are pasted below. Also I got the list of virus/worms/trojans that were cleaned by AVG. This may be useful for you to do the analysis. On scanning the C drive yesterday, AVG also showed that c:\windows\system32\shell32 and c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts files are changed. I could not do anything about the dll file but I cleaned up the hosts file by deleting all but the "127.0.0.1 localhost" entry.

I ran msconfig and made sure that all entries in startup tab are checked before taking hijackthis logs.

Thanks once again.
BP.

Hey there,
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Now, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click runThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Post this in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles.

I followed the steps and I do not see the windows "spyware detected" message anymore.
Here are the logs in case you find anything else suspicious.

Thanks a ton.

Hello there,
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access.

You are using peer-to-peer programs.
These are what we call an optional removal. However, anytime you are running any type of peer-to-peer application, you are more prone to infection by malware, and this is probably how you became infected in the first place. The choice to remove them is entirely up to you, but I would strongly recommend that you do.
If you do not want to, please at least refrain from using any peer-to-peer programs for the remainder of my fix.
For more information about infections as a result of p2p programs, take a look here: http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/

Please disable Spybot's "TeaTimer" function as it may hinder the removal of the infection:
Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check Yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Press on System Startup icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Click Allow Change box.
Please remember to re-enable it after you're clean.

Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to each of the following entries (if present):

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows update loader] C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe
O16 - DPF: {196D7803-DE83-431A-9FB5-DDD8B01BB0E7} (iagent Control) - https://192.168.3.183:8443/agent/iagent.cab

Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix checked button.

You're using an outdated version of Java (latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6). Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:
Go to Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
Select it and click Remove.
Then download and install the newest version from here:
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on Next
Select a target to scan; click on My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete choose the option to Save as Text
Post these results in your next reply.

Please include the Kaspersky report along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles,

- I have removed uTorrent
- Disabled TeaTimer
- Removed registry entry for xpupdate.exe
- iagent is a client internally used at work. This is build by us. So this can be skipped. Without this agent I can not connect to internet.
- I have installed jre 6
- Report from kaspersky is pasted below. The reported infection Exploit.Perl.Cisco.514flood is because of a perl file which is used to do cisco attack testing.

Thanks
BP

Sorry to be awkward, but that Kaspersky log makes my eyes hurt. Can you post it again for me without the html coding?
Thanks

Oops. Sorry. I thought you will cut-paste the html code in a file and can have a look at the report in visually appealing format. The txt logs are pasted below.

Thanks and Regards,

Hello BlackPanther,
Reboot into Safe Mode and delete this file:
D:\Personal\cge.pl
Reboot again, and let me know how things are running now.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles,

I had downloaded perl file cge.pl to study the flood attack on some cisco switch. The kaspersky reported infection Exploit.Perl.Cisco.514flood is because of this perl file. I am not sure if this could cause any harm to the PC !!

thanks,
BP

I think that this file is infected; since it is being flagged by Kaspersky, and this is not a program that normally reports false positives. However, if you are sure that the file is legit, you can leave it.
To be honest, I'm not really sure what you mean by this: "I had downloaded perl file cge.pl to study the flood attack on some cisco switch".
How are things running now?
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles,

cge.pl is not a binary file but a text file, a perl script. This script has the patterns (ascii printable and non-printable characters) used for exploiting the cisco router and switch vulnerabilities. These patterns are recongnized by kaspersky and hence it reports the file infected.

This script (Cisco Global Exploiter, CGE) is available a http://www.blackangels.it.

I had downloaded the script from the ablove site to test out security product of our company. I was to demonstrate how a script kiddy can connect to the office network and cause problems... and how our product detects this.

The windows security senter on my laptop does not report any malware anymore.

thanks for all your time and effort.

That sounds okay then.
Do you have any more malware-related problems?
