hello, venerable ones :)

please bear with me, i'll try to summarize my problem...

i like to burn dvds. i have nero 7 ultra and AnyDVD decoder on an HP a1310n computer.

before i chose nero, i downloaded alot of trial versions of various cloning programs, most of which were pretty lousy. (i fear this may have something to do with my problem)

i'm happily doing back ups when all of a sudden my HP drive doesn't detect a disk even though i just put one in. doing a reboot didn't help. tried different disks, no luck. CD's work, but not DVD's.

i tried to update my HP drive by downloading an update from the lite-on website, but i got this message:

no matched drive detected This utility is only for LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160H6S drive. Detected drive 2-0-0-0 E: LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160H6S CP81

:flowers: :trumpet: :inlove: :P

much frustration follows....so, i took the plunge and bought a new external dvd rw drive. i put the dvd in, and it starts playing. wonderful! so i go to nero and proceed to burn everything goes fine until it's time to put in the blank disc. then everything freezes up.

so i try putting in the original dvd again. no disc detected :) i try another dvd. this one starts, but after about 5 minutes, it is no longer detected by windows or AnyDvd.

i have run spyware doctor.......a registry cleaner........and ad-aware. i tried going back to a previous restore point, the problem was still there. i uninstalled nero and am in the process of reinstalling it.

i don't usually do the forum thing, but i'm that desperate. i'm worried that one of the trial programs left a little gremlin or something that is confusing my computer. (my apologies, mods, if this is in the wrong area) i'll download hijack this so i can get a log if needed.

the only good that's come out of this is that i was able to beat the pants off my final fantasy III DS game while i was waiting for stuff to download/install.

i've got to take the kids to school, so i'll check back later. any bit of help would be so appreciated!

First are the media ( DVD's} you are using compatible with your drive? That could be an issue

Otherwise your assumption that installing/uninstalling many burn programs could have faulted this could be very well be right.

Please do the following :

A)

Download install and update Ccleaner
After installing and updating go to options - advanced and tick prompt for registry back ups
Now Start up in safe mode
Do two runs

1) Click on problems and tick all. Click on analyse. At the end you will be prompted for storing a backup.
This will be stored, as a default, in My documents.
2) Click on cleaner click on analyse and accept all files to be removed.

Go to My Computer Rightclick Propperties Hardware tab and take the upper radio button.
Select the faulted drive press on delete and accept.

Make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest drivers for this drive

Now we are going to clean the remninants from previous Nero Installations

[quote]
Rename the folder "Ahead" in folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\
into "Ahead_2".
When reinstalling Nero, the folder "Ahead" will be created again.
The Nero's DirectShow filters and Codecs will also be installed and registered again.
As soon as the folder "Ahead" is once again created in the directory
C:\ Program Files\Common files\
the directory "Ahead_2" can be erased.

2)
Erase the contents of the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ahead\NeroDigital
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ahead\NeroRecode
C:\Documents and Settings \"USERNAME"\Application Data\Ahead\NeroVision\NVFACache

3)
Make sure that you have your Nero 7 serial number ready.
The serial number is structured as follows:
1Cxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx.
It can be found on a sticker on the jewel case.
If Nero is installed on your computer the serial number can be found as follows:
a)
Open Nero StartSmart and go into Nero ProductCenter by clicking on the "Nero" logo in the top left corner.
Click on the index box "Serial Numbers" to view the serial number.
:flowers:
Alternatively, you can find the serial number in the Registry:
Open the "Registry" by
- clicking on “Start” in Windows
- clicking on “Run”
- typing in "regedit" into the field "Open" and verifying with "OK"
The serial number is found in the following directory:
HHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ahead\Installation\Families\Nero 7\Info
- find the entry “serial7”
- double-click on “serial7”
- the serial number can be found here

4)
The General CleanTool should be used before reinstalling Nero to completely remove all Nero entries from your computer.
The General CleanTool can only be implemented if you are logged in as Administrator.
Warning: all Nero plug-ins will be removed as well!
Download the General-Cleantool from
ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/General-CleanTool_7.zip
and extract it on the hard drive by using WinZIP or WinRAR.
Start the General-Cleantool by double-clicking on the .exe file.
Choose
> Clean All
> Clean
> Deinstallation of all Nero products.
Restart the PC.
All Nero entries in the Registry are erased.

Afterwards, reinstall Nero by downloading the current Nero version
http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/nero7-demo.php
DO NOT INSTALL

Reboot into normal mode , the "add hardware wizzard "will pop up and install your Drive.

Now install Nero "with a clean slate "and try again"

i should've just shelled out the money for nero to begin with, and not been so cheap

i have been battling this for over a week, and it's driving me mad....i'll go look around in the malware thread.

thanks for your help, it was nice of you to take the time to post all of that...you can still be my friend :trumpet:

okay, now i'm really embarassed....i just checked under 'windows security' in the control panel, and i don't have anything right now. (please don't laugh too loudly <<blush>>)

i had AVG awhile back and when the trial period was done i tried to uninstall it, but there's this dialog box still pops up when i reboot...i'll write it down next time it comes up.

i just installed the trial of norton 360, let's see what it finds....
