My system is infected. It crashes when I run virus scanners. Thank you very much for any kind of help that you can give me.

Hello and welcome to BC.

I apologize for the delay. The helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy here lately. If you are still having malware problems, haven't received help elsewhere and still need help, post a fresh HijackThis log and I will be glad to help.

Hi,

Good to see that you have a firewall, but I cannot see any evidence of an antivirus application in your log. Please download one of these (free for personal use) anti-virus programs RIGHT NOW, update it and run a full scan. Have it fix anything it finds.

Grisoft AVG from here : http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
AntiVir Free from here : http://www.free-av.com/
Avast Home Edition from here : http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html

Note: You must only use 1 (one) AV at a time because if you have 2 or more AVs running at the same time, they will conflict with each other and make your security less reliable.

===================================================

Please disable SuperAntiSpyware so that it will not interfere with the fix.

Right-click on the shortcut from the system tray :
choose : View Control Center (preferences/options)
on the General and Startup tab:
uncheck : Start SUPERAntispyware when Windows starts
then click Close to exit.

===================================================

Please open HijackThis.
Click on Open Misc Tools Section
Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:
  • List all minor sections(Full)
  • List Empty Sections(Complete)
Click Generate StartupList Log.
Click Yes at the prompt.
It will open a text file. Please save that to your desktop.

Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Now, back at the main screen of HijackThis, click on Scan and put a check in front of the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

Close all browsers including this one and click on "fix checked".

====================================================

Restart your computer

====================================================

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and the StartupList log.

I ran AVG and found no viruses. Here's the other information that you asked for. I really appreciate your help.

Hi,

Nothing in the logs to cause the crashes when you run the virus scans. Are you still having problems?

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log please.

Hi, :thumbsup:

You had Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 running in your first log then nothing in your second log. Did you uninstall it in between?

I also noticed that you're using BitTorrent and LimeWire, p2p file sharing programs. I would like to warn you that the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware. these programs also tend to use your computer as a server. I would strongly recommend that you remove them from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

====================================

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it. Do not scan with it yet.

===================================

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

Posted Image
  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

=====================================

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode using the F8 method below.
a. If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
b. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
c. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
d. Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
e. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

===================================

From Safe Mode run Ccleaner
  • Click on Options,
  • Select Advanced
  • Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected.
  • Do not use the "Issues" block . It's meant for professionals.
  • Choose the Windows tab.
  • Check everything EXCEPT Advanced part of the Menu.
  • Click on "Analyze". This process could take a while.
  • If you don't want to loose your login passwords to certain sites, click on Options
  • Select cookies and move the ones you want to keep to the "cookies to keep" section, by highlighting and using the arrows in the middle.
  • Choose Run Cleaner.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
If you have more than one users, run Ccleaner for every user
===================================

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
====================================

Reboot your computer in Normal mode

====================================

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  • Click on Posted Image located at the bottom of the page.
  • A "pop up" window will appear. Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  • Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place
Begin the scan by selecting Posted Image
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on Posted Image then click Posted Image and post back the contents please.
[size=1]* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.

=====================================

Let's find out if you have any malware disabled with selective start-up.
Go to Start >Run and type "Notepad" without the quotes
Copy/paste the following blue text into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is unchecked.
Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad file and Save as:
  • Name the file mslook.bat
  • Save as Type: All files (not as a text document or it won't work)
  • Select the desktop icon on the left to save it on the desktop.
Locate mslook.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

regedit /a /e %systemdrive%\regkey.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig"
notepad %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
del /q %systemdrive%\regkey.txt

===========================================

Please post back the following. You may have to post them separately if too long.

a fresh HijackThis log taken after the reboot.
AVG Anti-Spyware log
Panda Online scan results
mslook.bat text

Hi,

It's looking very good. :flowers: Well done. :thumbsup: What AVG AS is reporting is in the system restore which we'll take care of in the next post. I don't remember asking you to download Pocket Killbox but since you already have it , please delete the following files and folders:

(I assume you know how to use it. If not, let me know. Make sure to delete them one at a time)

C:\SmitfraudFix
C:\Spyware&Security\smitrem
C:\SDFix
E:\downloads2\SmitfraudFix
C:\Program Files\Common Files\{3C43D032-0C01-1033-0525-060525040001}
C:\Spyware&Security\smitRem.exe
C:\downloads\SDFix.exe

Have the following entry fixed with HijackThis, following my earlier instructions, if you no longer have Kaspersky and delete its folder in the C:\ Program Files folder.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: klogon - C:\WINDOWS\system32\klogon.dll

Please let me know how the computer is running now.

Hi, :flowers:

It seems to be running well. What do I do next?

Great!.... :thumbsup: Now that you have clean system, please perform the following steps to remain that way.

Please remove/delete all the tools I asked you to download, except AVG Anti Spyware and Ccleaner.

Since AVG Anti Spyware is a trial version, the realtime guard and automatic update will stop functioning after the trial period. That is why we are not installing the guard so it will not interfere with the cleanup or the malware removal process. You can use AVG-AS as an on-demand scanner (recommended) but you will have to manually update the definition file each time you scan.

Ccleaner is also a useful tool to keep for cleaning your cookies and temp files on a regular basis.

Re-enable all the realtime scanners I may have asked you to disable.

==============================

Your Java is slightly out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6.0 windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

===============================

Create a new System Restore point to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Go to Start>Run and type sysdm.cpl. Press Enter
  • Select the System Restore Tab
  • Place a check in "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • Click Apply
  • next, uncheck the same checkbox.
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
You can also find instructions on how to disable and re enable system restore here:

You're very welcome. :thumbsup:

Do you recommend running Spyware Blaster?

Yes, I certainly do. It's also mentioned in the link provided at the end of my last post.
