I recently purchased Windows XP Pro SP2b OEM version for a PC I have yet to build (my first), and a techie buddy of mine informed me that I may not be able to upgrade my hardware (add memory, hard drive, etc.) after installing this version without a huge hassle or illegal messages from Microsoft. Anyone else have a problem with this? Software not opened yet so I may be able to return if necessary.

You would have to make numerous changes before needing to call in to reactivate. I have upgraded my computer that has XP Home OEM several times. I have had to call in once to reactivate. The main component that the OEM version is tied to is the motherboard.

Thanks alot for the quick response! I think I will hang on to the version I have. It came with a Vista upgrade coupon but I will not be doing that any time soon as I want to hear what bugs (if any) come along with it (former millenium user!). Thanks again!

Order the Vista upgrade anyway - that way you'll have it if you need it.
