I am seeking help. I recently upgraded to the newest McAfee and since then it has been catching a lot of activity. On Feb 19, a file called taskdir.exe started emailing from my computer and Roadrunner sent us a notice saying they were shutting off my internet connection because of illegal activity from my machine. I have run McAfee, dowloaded Previx Console 30 day trial, have also run Spy Bot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware and all the free online scanners including BitDefender, Housecall and Panda. BitDefender says it cannot delete/disinfect several files, Panda won't run and Housecall runs to a point but seems to close down before it cleans anything. Here is my HiJack this log. Please help. I do everything on my computer and fear I have something on it that could be very bad to have so many recurring virus messages as of late:

Hello nicole77,

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you. :thumbsup:

Disable your antivirus program and go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan". This scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

*******************

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune DO NOT run it yet.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (formerly Ewido)
This is a 30 day trial of the program

AVG Anti-Spyware is designed to be used to both scan for and remove malicious files and also to run in real-time alongside, but not replace, your existing anti-virus program to give an added layer of protection.
Both the Resident Shield and Automatic Updates will only be available for the thirty day trial period, after that AVG Anti-Spyware will revert to a stand-alone scanner which you can keep and manually update for free and use in a similar way to Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D etc.

1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept the default installation path: C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. You can select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Sheild' and 'Automatic Updates'. If you choose to do this, then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
7. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
8. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method so Windows will start with minimal drivers and running processes.
To do this restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

1.) Double-click the small BLUE Garbage Can ATF-Cleaner.exe file to run the program.
2.) At the top, under Main choose: Select All
3.) Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use the Firefox browser:
1.) At the top, click Firefox and choose: Select All
2.) Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use the Opera browser:
1.) At the top, click Opera and choose: Select All
2.) Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 as follows:

1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.

Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.

Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).

Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).

Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).

Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".

2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.

4. IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.

Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
(1)
, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
(2) At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button.
(3) When done, click the Save Scan Report button.
(4) Click the Save Report as button.
Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt.
Save to your desktop.
A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

Reboot to Normal Mode.

When done, submit the BitDefender log, the [b]AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
log and a fresh Hijackthis log.

BitDefender Log
All that shows up on it is viruses that are jailed in Previx (which I downloaded after I read something about it on another bleepingcomputer.com forum when I was researching taskdir.exe) so I think that is good. Not sure what to do with the files in jail. Should I delete them? Now I'm going to reboot in safe mode to do the rest of what you suggested.

Ok, this took a while. Here is the rest of the information. I'm not seeing anything bad pop up with these scans. Does this mean I got it all? I'm just really puzzled because I am alerted to new viruses on my computer constantly! They usually are named Trojan.Downloader.__ (insert any 2 letters). McAfee alerts me to these when it catches them- sometimes several times per night.

Prevx1 Jail items: (I downloaded this program the day the emailing worm appeared- I already deleted the program taskdir.exe) all found in C: \Windows\System 32
CDEUMNFG.EXE
DD.EXE
MQSNOZPM.EXE
NXMAUTAI.EXE
XVKOZJEP.EXE
ZU.EXE

Hi nicole,

I only see one item to fix. :thumbsup:

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

In Normal Mode select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

reboot your computer

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
    This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi Mike,
Ok I've completed the new tasks. I ran CC Cleaner for all user names. Then, I ran drweb cure it. It identified some files that looked really important to me, but since I was following instructions to the T, I clicked cure all, move incurable files as instructed & I figure you can let me know if I blew away anything I will need to get back . Here's my log:
mcupdmgr.exe;c:\program files\mcafee\msc;Probably DLOADER.Trojan;Incurable.Moved.;
tgcmd.exe;c:\program files\support.com\bin;Probably DLOADER.Trojan;Incurable.Will be moved after reboot.;
inst.exe;C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL Downloads\triton_suite_install_6.0.28.3;Probably BACKDOOR.Trojan;Incurable.Moved.;
WxBug.EXE;C:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles;Adware.Aws;Incurable.Moved.;
aolsetup.exe;C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\softwareUpdate\ver2_13_13_7;Probably BACKDOOR.Trojan;Incurable.Moved.;
mcinst.exe;C:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\Installer;Probably BACKDOOR.Trojan;Incurable.Moved.;
sdcmon.dll;C:\Program Files\support.com\bin;Probably DLOADER.Trojan;Incurable.Moved.;
tgcmd.exe;C:\Program Files\support.com\bin;Probably DLOADER.Trojan;Incurable.Moved.;
tgupdate.exe;C:\Program Files\support.com\bin;Probably DLOADER.Trojan;Incurable.Moved.;
GTDownDE_87.ocx;C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32;Adware.Gdown;Incurable.Moved.;

Now obviously, I kind of needed my McAfee update manager so as soon as I rebooted, McAfee popped up and told me I would need to reinstall McAfee Security Center. I have not done this as of yet. Not sure if the file was actually infected with DLOADER.Trojan or if Dr Web just thought it looked suspicious. Awaiting instructions from you. Kinda concerns me if my McAfee file was infected. It also identified mcinste.exe which I thought was my McAfee installer. I guess I will need to redownload that in order to reinstall McAfee Security Center.

According to my google search: tgcmd.exe is a process associated with an online support software from SupportSoft. It is often used for on-line support by large manufacturers like Sony and Toshiba. I don't think I have Sony or Toshiba components on my computer, but sounds like I may need that file too? Inst.exe was in an AOL folder and I never use AOL just AIM. WxBug.exe is weather bug which I am happy to be rid of. Seems to come back time and again. Have no clue what the other files were for.

Here's my updated HiJack This Log:

Hi nicole77,

McAfee popped up and told me I would need to reinstall McAfee Security Center. I have not done this as of yet.

Reinstall McAfee Security Center.

Kinda concerns me if my McAfee file was infected. It also identified mcinste.exe which I thought was my McAfee installer. I guess I will need to redownload that in order to reinstall McAfee Security Center.

Looks like the Dr.Web is having some false postives. :thumbsup:

According to my google search: tgcmd.exe is a process associated with an online support software from SupportSoft. It is often used for on-line support by large manufacturers like Sony and Toshiba. I don't think I have Sony or Toshiba components on my computer, but sounds like I may need that file too?

If you dont use it (or never have used it) then I would not put it back, but it is up to you.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/tgcmd.exe-5729.html

tgcmd.exe - This part ensures the software is installed correctly (similar to an installation wizard) as reported by Cox.
Regarded as spyware by some as it has the ability to retrieve user information. Whether it does so depends upon the provider. "tgcmdprovidersbc" is for SBC Yahoo DSL. One Toshiba user reports problems with hibernate on his laptop if disabled - hence the "U" recommendation

Your Hijackthis log looks clean. :flowers: How is everything working?

Hi Mike,
Kinda figured I would have to reinstall McAfee so just finished doing that. Will have to wait and see if I need the Toshiba tool at all- I can't imagine what application is for. Machine appears to be working fine. No viruses notices so far tonight and appears to be running faster. Thank you so much for your help.

Anything I can do to help prevent this from happening in the future (aside from the million and one spyware/adware/antivirus programs I am now running on my machine). I had zone alarm up until a few months ago. It kept blocking me getting onto the internet despite me playing with the settings.

Hi nicole,

Let's reset you files so they are hidden and protected.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect Show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.

Hello again,
Ok, the only thing I actually had to do here was deselect show hidden files. The other was already checked and I had previously disabled my system restore to scan for viruses and had actually never re-enabled it so I just did so.

Thanks for the article and thanks for your help!
Nicole

Oops. forgot to give the list of free firewalls. :thumbsup: Remember to only install one firewall, as two will cause major problems.

Kerio Personal Firewall

Outpost Firewall Free

Jetico Personal Firewall

Sygate free is no longer being supported by Sygate. It was bought out by Symantec and they immediately discontinued it, but it is still available at http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sygate_Personal_...Free_d3356.html

One more quick question: I installed sygate from the link you sent. Do I need to disable the McAfee firewall from McAfee Security Center. I disabled it to install Sygate and was not sure if I should reenable it or not.

Thanks

Hi Nichole,

Yes, disable McAfee firewall. You only want one firewall running at a time. Two firewalls running at the same time will cause problems.
