my brother had system crash--
Gateway desktop --- ? type---
( i am trying to help him long-ditance)

had to restore Win XP pro (disk with SP1)--
able to boot to sign on now, but lost password--
"admin" does not work as password.

any help/ suggestions ?

If you just recovered/repaired the installation leave the password blank and press the <Enter> key.

Can he boot on as any user? If so try this tool to promote your account to admin from there change the passwords.http://blogs.msdn.com/aaron_margosis/archive/2004/07/24/193721.aspx (make me admin)
