When attempting to run msconfig, it appears to start loading then just stops. On checking the processes tab in Taskmanager, it is running?. Regedit and Taskmanager work fine. I've re-installed msconfig from i386 folder and downloaded same from MS but still will not run. Have also run various virus/spyware checkers (Norton AV 2007, Sypbot Search & Destroy, Ad Aware), togther with a number of 'online' scanners from such as BitDefnder, Panda, F-Secure.

Hijackthis loag and startup list below.

Not a major problem but very annoying all the same.

Cheers

Kenco.

Hi Kenco and welcome to the Bleeping Computer forums. My name is Whisperer and I will be helping you with your problem. Although I am experienced with computers, I am currently a Trainee in Malware removal and, as such, ALL of my fixes will be checked by malware experts. I am sorry for the delay in answering your problem but things are pretty hectic in the anti-malware world. If you still need help then please read on.

If you have not done so already, please do the initial cleanup steps in the following instructions and then post a new log: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting a HijackThis Log

To assist me in any cleanup, I would like you to produce a list of installed programs.
  • To do this open yourHijackThis
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section or Config… button, depending on how you are set up.
    • If you used the Config... option then click the Misc Tools tab
    • Select Open Uninstall Manager , a list of your installed programs will be displayed.
    • Select the Save List… button and save the file to your desktop.
  • Please post a copy of this list and an up-to-date HijackThis log in your reply
GT

Sorry for the delay, this is just a short note to advise you that you have not been forgotten.

I am wading through your StartUp List at the moment and that is taking a bit of research. Hope to get back to you within the next 48 hours.

Hi Kenco

So far so good, as we are ready to move to a clean-up of some odds and ends. Sorry it has taken so long but I wanted to be sure that I had not missed something else; I say that as my tutor pointed out that you had msconfig running successfully in your second log.
  • We will start with a clean of your HijackThis log so please start your HijackThis and click on Scan Where appropriate I will intersperse italicised comments.
    • Click in the check-box to the left of each of the following entries, if found
      • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
      • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
      • O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5} - (no file)

      • O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain =

      • O23 - Service: MCZXHXA - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\MCZXHXA.exe (file missing)

I instinctively dislike anything in the trusted zone and would strongly recommend that you tick the next two items, it will not stop you carrying out updates but will prevent something misusing the addresses
      • O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.update.microsoft.com
      • O15 - Trusted Zone: http://download.windowsupdate.com
The next two are resource hogs in that they do not need to run each time windows runs, these are optional fixes
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      • O23 - Service: Google Updater Service (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe
    • With all windows closed except HijackThis, select Fix Checked
  • Next we will clean out some of the crud that accumulates on every computer. Please download CCleaner
    • Select the Download Latest Version link (top of green column) and save to your desktop
    • Right-click the ccsetup127.exe file on your desktop and select Open
    • Follow the on-screen instructions through to the Install Options page. I suggest you only retain the following 2 options
      • Add Desktop Shortcut
      • Automatically check for updates etc…
    • Click Install
      To setup CCleaner
    • Click on the CCleaner icon on your desktop.
    • From the menu on the left select Options
    • Now select Advanced. On the right remove the check against Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
    • Select Cookies. When CCleaner is run it will remove all of the cookies in the left window; if there are cookies that you wish to retain then select them and transfer them to the right window. Multiple selections can be made by holding down the Ctrl key before selecting.
    • Select Cleaner from the left menu and the Windows tab
      • Under Internet Explorer place ticks in all but the last box
      • Under Windows Explorer tick the last two only
      • Under System tick all boxes
      • There is no need to tick anything under Advanced
    • From the menu on the left click on Analyze
    • When the analysis is complete, click on Run Cleaner and OK at the next screen.
    • Close CCleaner
  • Before I can give you all-clean recommendations I would like to make sure that there is nothing running in the background that has not been detected just yet. Download Silentrunners.zip from here and save it to your Desktop.
    • First you will need to extract the file(s).
      • Right click on the zipped folder and from the new menu click on Extract All
      • In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next
      • Click on Next again.
      • In the final window, click on Finish
      • You should now see the contents of the Silent Runners folder - Silent Runnners.vbs.
    • Double click Silent Runners.vbs to run it.
      IMPORTANT
Some real-time protection programs may warn you of a possibly malicious script being detected when you run Silent Runnners.vbs, allow it to run. Alternatively, disable any script blocking software you have running before you start.
    • You will receive a prompt: Do you want to skip supplementary searches? - click NO
    • Once the All Done! prompt flashes up, open the Startup Program text file that has appeared in the folder and copy & paste it into your next reply.
  • Please post the Silent Runners log and after a reboot a new HijackThis log. Please advise how the computer is now behaving.
GT

Hi Whisperer,

Have followed your instructions. On final reboot and prior to running Hijackthis for this log, I tried running msconfig, again all i get is approx 4-5 seconds of harddrive activity and a busy curser then nothing...no windows open/pop up. The results from Silent Runners and Hijackthis are below. Again thanks for this and your time and efforts.....

Hi Kenco,

Very strange… You had msconfig running when you produced the hijackthis log…. I still have to examine the silent runners log but there is something you can do for me whilst I am looking and that is to find every instance of msconfig that is on your computer.

To do this I need you to ensure that any hidden and system files are visible to the system.
  • Select the Start button and from the available options
  • Right-click the My Computer option.
  • Select Explore from the drop-down menu
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. from the new window
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders by clicking in the check-box to its left
  • Remove the check against Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option, again by clicking the check-box to its left.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
  • Windows does not search for hidden or system files by default so
  • Click the Start button and select Search choosing For Files or Folders
  • From the dialogue box select All files and folders and at the bottom select More Advanced Options
  • Place selection ticks in the check-boxes for
  • Search system folders
  • Search hidden files and folders
  • Search subfolders
[*]Now scroll back up and put msconfig* in the search box, do not put any extension on and do put the star at the end to search for all file names.
[*]When the search is complete please make a note of all of the files that have been found and post the results back here
[*]Close the search dialogue box
[/list]GT

Hi Kenco,

I have looked through your logs and can find nothing untoward on the surface, so this post will be a deeper check on your system for a lurking rootkit.

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner from here but please note that this scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Follow the instruction on the page for installation. It will take a little while to download the components.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs, click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply together with the info from the previous post.
GT

Hi Kenco,

Firstly a big thank you from all involved in sorting Computer problems, far too often a thread is left hanging with no clue as to the final outcome of the victims’ problems. :flowers:

I will post you some advice to reduce the chances of infection in your future surfing as your computer appears to be clean.
  • First we make sure that if you have any bad files already in a System Restore point they can not re-infect your computer; we do this by giving you a clean restore point and removing all the old ones.
    • Now let's reset your restore points.
      • Click the Start Menuand select All Programs
      • Choose Accessories and then System Tools
      • Scroll down to SystemRestore and select.
      • Choose Create a Restore Point then Next.
      • Name it and press Create
      • When the confirmation screen shows, the restore point has been created click Close.
    • Next go to Start Menu select Run
      • Type: cleanmgr in the new window and click OK to allow the initial process to start.
      • When the Disk Cleanup dialogue box opens go to the More Options tab and, in the System Restore area, press Clean Up. Select Yes to remove all the restore points except the one we just created
      • To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.
  • Finally, HijackThis makes backups of all corrections made
    • Open HijackThis and select either Open the Misc Tools section or Config button
    • Click the Backups button and select Delete All and then Yes
    • Close HijackThis
Preventative measures
  • Firstly Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options .
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • You might like to switch your Browser to one that is less susceptible to attack by the hackers, I personally use Firefox almost exclusively but there are still a few sites out there that insist on Internet Explorer
  • Your copies of Spybot S&D and AdAware should be run at least once every two weeks after they have been updated. I suggest that you do the same with CCleaner.
  • In addition I would suggest that you install the following 3 free programs, keep these updated as they are background tools
    • SpywareBlaster - will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A tutorial can be found here
    • SpywareGuard - provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to the SpywareBlaster protection method; it scans files before you open them and prevents execution if spyware is detected. It also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection. A tutorial can be found here
    • IE-SpyAd puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. A tutorial is available here
  • A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer. A tutorial can be found http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm which has the MVPS Hosts File on site. Furthermore the website contains useful tips and links to other resources and utilities.
Bluetack's Hosts File and Hosts Manager - contains most if not all the known spyware sites, sites responsible for hijacks, rogue applications etc... Download Bluetack's Hosts file here and the Hosts Manager here
  • WinPatrol – I run the bought version of this program as it has a very useful database for further reference, it also has a free version without the explanatory database. It uses a heuristic approach to detecting attacks and violations of your computing environment. Traditional security programs scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. WinPatrol takes a snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others download new reference files. You can read more about it here with a download from here
  • Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware". You will find the list here
  • Windows Updates – It is very important to ensure that Internet Explorer and Windows are kept up to date with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. Click on the Start button and select Windows Update, follow the online instructions from there.
  • On a similar vein do ensure that all of your Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software are also kept up to date.
  • Some excellent guide lines to follow to prevent future infections can also be found in this article by Lawrence Abrams
Best wishes and safe surfing

GT
