Hello,
I have been having a problem with pop-up ads for some time now... an ad will pop-up about half of the times that i refresh my browser window or visit a new webpage, regardless of the website. I have run scans with spybot-S&D and AdAware, and the pop-up adds still continue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Here is my HJT log:

Download the latest version of HijackThis!: Download here HJT 1.99. Save it on your Desktop. You will need now to unzip hijackthis.exe to a permanent folder, such as c:\hjt . This has to be done as HijackThis creates backups. You may need to use these backups.

First create a new folder:
A. Click My Computer icon on your desktop
B. Click C: drive
C. Click the File menu --> New --> Folder, a folder "New folder" will be created.
D. Rename it HJT

Unzip hijackthis.exe to the c:\HJT folder.

Run HijackThis.exe Press the Scan button, then Save Log.
Notepad will open.

In Notepad click
Edit menu --> Select All
then
Edit menu --> Copy

When responding to a post from one of our HJT Team members, please reply in the same topic - click the Add Reply button. Do not create a new topic for your reply. This will cause confusion and only cause a delay in the help you are receiving.

Right click in the message area and click on the paste option to paste the log into the post.

Please post the complete log.
Never trim the Hijackthis Log. We need all information contained in that log, so please include everything from the original log.

Did you create them yet ?

Hi,
I downloaded and unzipped the newest version of HJT as you recommended, but every time I try to run a scan, the program freezes and is forced to quit partway through. I think it always quits at the same location during the scan - it always says O23 - NT services across the top. I did not have this problem when using the older version of HJT (ver. 1.97.0.7). What should I do?

Hi :thumbsup:

Please uninstall from Add\Remove Programs:
WinTools

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Click File menu -> Save and name the file as unhide.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
Save this file on the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"SearchSystemDirs"=dword:00000001
"SearchHidden"=dword:00000001
"IncludeSubFolders"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001

Double-click on the unhide.reg file you saved on your desktop, and when it prompts to merge say Yes.

Please print or copy these instructions because you are not able to access the Internet in SafeMode.

Download Ad-aware SE 1.05: here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.

Download System Security Suite here:
System Security Suite Download & Tutorial. Unzip it to your desktop.
Install the program. Don't use it yet.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some experts think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it...
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Search for these files and delete them if present:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\chk.dll <-- this file
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe <-- this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe <-- this file NOTE: You will find two files with the same name in the C:\WINNT\System32\ folder: userinit.exe. One is bad and one is legitimate. You must delete only the bad file.
Right click on each file and select Properties.
In the General tab the legitimate file has this Description: Userinit Logon Application, Size = 24.576 bytes Do not delete this file, it is a Microsoft file.

The bad file has this size = 389,120 bytes, and the description is chkdsk.exe. The icon is blue colored with three letters: FMC. The bad file will not appear alphabetically.

Delete these folders, if present:
C:\Program files\Common files\WinTools\ <-- this folder
C:\Program files\Toolbar\ <-- this folder

Run AdAware, press the "Start" button, uncheck "Scan for negligible risk entries", select "Perform full system scan" and press "Next". Let AdAware remove anything it finds.

Clean out temporary and Temporary Internet Files.
A. Open System Security Suite.
B. In the Items to Clear tab thick:

Press the Clear Selected Items button.
Close the program.

REBOOT normally.

Download remv3.zip from here: http://forums.skads.org/index.php?showtopic=80 (last post --> Attached File)

and save it on your desktop. Then extract the zip file to c:\ms4hd.

Boot your computer into Safe Mode. Instructions on how to do this can be found here: How to boot Windows into Safe Mode

Navigate to c:\ms4hd and double-click on the remv3.bat file. When it is done it will open a log file of what it found. This log file is saved in c:\log.txt.

Reboot your computer back to normal mode and post the contents of c:\log.txt. To open it, click on start, then run, and type notepad c:\log.txt and press the OK button.

A notepad will open up. Please create a reply to this message and post the contents of that notepad along with a new hijackthis log.

Thanks for the detailed instructions Daisuke! Here are my remv3.bat log and new HJT log
P.S. Another problem that I have been having recently is that every time I reboot my computer, it fails to initialize the ATI video driver correctly, and I have to update the driver each time I restart. Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

I have to update the driver each time I restart. Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

No idea. You have to ask ATI for support, or the video driver producer.
