I've been trying to fix this problem all day! My stepfather was cruisin some internet porn when he clicked on something that he thought was legit (he's very new to computers!) and managed to really mess up the computer with a backdoor trojan (or two, or three) which I believe I have managed to get rid of. For a while I was getting fake security alerts telling me I had all these problems. I ran AVG anti-virus & spyware, AdAware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, Trend Micro Anti Spyware Venus Spy Trap and Pest Patrol. Oh! And I also followed the instructions I found on another forum to run SmitFraud. Each seemed to get rid of a few different things. The fake security alerts have stopped and the virus scans have come back clean. I've run AdAware & Spybot each about 5 times now and its still finding the same things over and over again. I click to fix or delete them and run the scan again but its always the same. I can't get on to any Government websites at ALL because of this and I really need to do that as part of my job! :flowers: PLEASE HELP ASAP! This is my HijackThis log file.

Hi PMS-ING, :flowers:

I can't get on to any Government websites at ALL because of this and I really need to do that as part of my job!

Since I am still in the learning process to become a qualified helper I need permission from my coach before posting to you and that takes time of course. It appears you're in a hurry. If you want me to help you let me know using Add reply.

Hi PMS-ING,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

Unfortunately your HijackThis log isn't complete and is lacking an essential part: none of the processes running on your computer are listed.

Please run another scan and post the complete log, that is including the running processes, in this thread using the Add reply button.

Ok so unfortuneately I wasn't getting a quick enough response on this (sorry guys... )and I've been working away at this all day and I FINALLY fixed it! :flowers: My DNS servers were hijacked. For anyone else that has had this problem, here's what to do:

After you've run your anti-virus (Panda worked for me) and Spybot S&D and Adaware and they've all come back clean, go to your Network Connections, right click on the connection you use and go to Properties. Once in your Properties, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties. If the radio button is clicked beside "Use the following DNS server addresses:" then click the other one that says "Obtain DNS Server addresses automatically" and click ok. Next, go to Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>Command Prompt and type in "ipconfig/flushdns" (without the quotation marks of course) and once it says that it has successfully been flushed, close that window and reboot your computer. That should do it! Once you've rebooted and everything is up and running again, you can go to your connection properties and use 198.164.30.62 & 198.164.4.62 in the "Use the following DNS server addresses:" field to be sure it won't happen again.

I hope this helps someone cause I have been working hard at this for 2 days  and I finally got it going!!!!

Hi PMS-ING,

I advise you print these instructions and go through them before doing anything so you know what you're expected to do.

1. Unfortunately I see no firewall in your runing processes which probably means that you have none. I urge you to install one since it's your first defense against malware. There are several good but for free programmes available like:

Sygate
Kerio
Zone alarm

For a tutorial on Firewalls click: Understanding and Using Firewalls!

2. While it is acceptable to have two anti-virus programs installed, it is not a good idea to have them both running in auto-protect mode as it may make both less effective. Choose just one to run in auto-protect and use the other for ad-hoc scans only.

3. We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

You may re-enable it again when your computer is clean; I will let you know!

4. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Do not run it yet.

5. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.zpecialoffer.com/indexie.html
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LanzarL2007] "C:\DOCUME~1\Paula\LOCALS~1\Temp\{D196006F-030E-42E7-A3C9-3E3045A8DFE7}\{D1DA2BA7-2592-4036-9BB2-DCCABDE8DC1A}\..\..\L2007tmp\Setup.exe" /SETUP:"/l0x0009"
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [BorraT2006TMP] cmd /C RD /s/q "C:\DOCUME~1\Paula\LOCALS~1\Temp\L2007tmp\"
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{38DB9C70-A300-447C-ABF9-801D857B61E6}: NameServer = 85.255.113.110,85.255.112.227
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.110 85.255.112.227
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.110 85.255.112.227

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

If you have connection problems after this:
  • Go to Control Panel. - If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category. If you are in Classic View, go to the next step .
    Double-click the Network Connections icon
Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties.
Hilight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
Be sure Obtain DNS server address automatically is selected.
    OK your way out.
  • Go to Start > Run and type in: cmd

    Click OK.
This will open a command prompt.
Type or copy and paste the following line in the command window:

    ipconfig /flushdns

    Hit Enter
    Exit the command window
Do that before you restart.

6. Make sure you can view all files. Click Start >My Computer > Tools > Folder Options >View. Check "Show hidden files and folders", uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types". Click "Apply to all folders" >Apply then OK.

7. Reboot and as the computer starts up, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times and then choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear.

8. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following folders in bold if listed:

C:\DOCUME~1\Paula\LOCALS~1\Temp\{D196006F-030E-42E7-A3C9-3E3045A8DFE7}
C:\DOCUME~1\Paula\LOCALS~1\Temp\L2007tmp\

9. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

10. Reboot to go back into Normal mode.

11. Download FixWareout from Subratam.org or BleepingComputer.com!

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt).

12. Download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) and save to your C:\ drive.
  • Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
  • Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\blbeta.exe /expert
  • Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
  • Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
  • Click "Scan".
  • After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
  • BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
  • The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
13. You're using an outdated version of Java (latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0). Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

    Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0
14. Finally run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

So please post the FixWareout report.txt together with F-secure online report, the Blacklight report and a new Hijackthis log

Thanks for all that but I actually got it figured out on my own with far less steps. I DO have a firewall, I just had to disable it to get something ELSE working. I got rid of all the Spyware/Adware/Malware/Trojans with Spybot S&D, AdAware, and Panda. I had to run each of those a few times and eventually they all came back clean. I had a previous anti-virus on there that was running at the time I did the HijackThis scans, but removed one as it wasn't picking up any of my problems. Once I was rid of all that, I was still having the problem with certain webpages that I was visiting being redirected, thats when I realized it was DNS HiJacking. So I checked my Network Connection properties and sure enough the settings were wrong. I did the DNS Flush and all is well now. I've since done Spybot S&D, Adaware & antivirus scans and everything comes back clean. Thanks for trying to help but I couldn't wait any longer to get this up and running! I may not be a computer expert like you guys, but I am by no means a beginner.

Here's the latest HijackThis log. As for your suggestion about the Java being out of date, the version I have is JRE 5, update 11. I checked the website and thats the latest version they have available on there as well but after running a quick search I found the 6.0 version so I'm installing that now. Other than that everything else seems fine. Check out the log to be sure.

Hi PMS-ING,

Log looks okay to me. Just some final things to do and you're ready to go:

1. It looks like you still have your firewall disabled, please enable it a.s.a.p. to be on the safe side again.

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

Can you please post a fresh HijackThis log for review. If that's clean I still have some final instructions for you to finalise this process of solving the problems you had.

I have windows firewall, it IS enabled it just doesn't get picked up by HijackThis. I know its working cause it popped up yesterday when I reinstalled a program. The items that you told me to fix with Hijack this always come back in a new scan even after checking them off and clicking "Fix Checked." They don't have any values attached to them so I can't see how they'd cause any troubles. I'd post the log but it looks the exact same as the last one. Thanks for your help!
