Hi there,
I am experiencing a problem with excel 2003 slow to open - Does anyone have any ideas?
It has only just happened and I haven't done anything that would cause it. (Not that I know of anyway!)

Cheers

Have you recently installed other applications or done any upgrades or anything as this is not normally something that will happen on the off chance.

You could try and use the firstrun switch to see if this opens correctly.

Start->Run-> type"excel.exe /firstrun"

Hi Projectfocus
The only thing I have done is remove all my old java stuff and installed just the latest version.

If I start a "blank" spreadsheet either via the shortcut icon or as you suggested "excel.exe /firstrun" it starts almost straight away. If I try to open an existing spreadsheet (direct) it takes forever.
If I open the spreadsheet I want from within an open "blank" spreadsheet (i.e file-open) then it opens straight away.
I have also noticed that word is doing the same thing.
Both are part of office 2003 professional.

Any ideas as to why?

Are the application files on an external hard disk?
Did you ever did a thorough cleanup of your computer?
Do you have a lot of shortcuts to office docs on your desktop?

Yes I have the application files on disk.
I do a regular clean up of my PC every month - sometimes sooner - Has not affected it before.
No I don't have a lot of office shortcuts on the desktop.

Next

Uninstall Office than

Download install and update Ccleaner
After installing and updating go to options - advanced and tick prompt for registry back ups
Now Start up in safe mode
Do two runs

1) Click on problems and tick all. Click on analyse. At the end you will be prompted for storing a backup.
This will be stored, as a default, in My documents.
2) Click on cleaner click on analyse and accept all files to be removed.

Install office and see what happens

You dont need to reinstall Office to fix your problem.

Put your office 2003 CD in your PC. Go to add/remove programs. Find your office program on there. Click change. Then click repair. This will repair your office program to the factory state. You wont loose documents or anything, it just repairs the files.

Let me know if this fixes the issue!
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 l McAfee Total Protection l Super AntiSpyware Free Edition l AdAware SE Personal l Spyware Blaster l Spyware Guard l Safe Eyes 2007

Thanks Jesse and Fozzie - I'm still not having any luck on this one - Frustrating.
In answer to your idea Jesse,Nope. Tried just the "fix" and also a re-install.
Could it be I have lost some registers from previos CC Cleans do prior to all this?? If so is there a way of searching for it and then re-installing it??
As mentioned before I have a shortcut to the EXCEL program on the desktop which opens straight away and I can then open any excel spreadsheets without any problem. However, trying to open any spreadsheet from scratch causes this "long time" to open issue. I am having exactly the same problem with WORD!!!???
