I have two computers, both of which are in need of a new mouse.

Presently, both machines are equipped with a 'wheel' mouse--with ball and cable.

In purchasing a new mouse for each of my computers, what kind of a computer mouse would I ask for?

Would such a computer mouse require new software?

Both computers use Windows XP Pro

I would be most grateful for any help you might provide.

Most mouses work fine with the built-in drivers in Windows XP. Only if you get something fancy with a lot of extra buttons and stuff will you need any new software. If you want to keep it simple I'd recommend a pair of optical scroll-wheel mouses. Personally I prefer Logitech.
