hello,
I have Mozilla firefox 1.5, and windows XP home.
One day I turned on computer and the size of everything had changed - the icons, the start bar, the names of the URL's, the icons on the toolbar, everything was much smaller.
I went to display->settings->advanced and found that DPI is set at 96, which indicates 'normal', so I left that alone.
Screen resolution was 1024x768, which is how it was set when my computer was set up by a friend.

I experimented by changing the resolution to 800x600. This restored everything to the original size, but now the letters are blurry.

Appreciate any ideas as to - what happened to cause this, because I didn't do anything.
And there must be some way to have everything be the usual normal size, and have sharp focus of the type.

thank you,
ellen

ellenr, I've read of this sort of thing happening after a Windows update.
We just had one this past Tuesday.

I can confirm that. It happened to my system from the updates a few months ago. I just reset the DPI to 120.

wow. You guys (and gals) are amazing! Such quick replies and seem to be on the money, except I still have some questions.
OK- I set the DPI to 120.
And you are right, I hadn't thought of it, but I'm pretty sure that I recently accidentally updated windows. (I hadn't intended to).

The result of chanign DPI to 120 is that some text like that on my desktop is now the right size, the size it used to be, and the type also went back to the same type I had before the unwanted change, so that is all good.

But some things are small, for example this web site, everything is very small. I used the "View" to increase text size, but before I changed the DPI, I didn't have to increase the text size.
So that's odd.
I'm going to try different web sites and see if it is always the case.

Also, the change re-arranged my start bar, but I think I know how to fix that. I will fool around with it, and if I can't I'll be back and ask.

thank you!

Nope- still problems.
Some of the text is the usual size - for example the text in the URL box.
But when I go to a web site, I have the reduced size text.

And the icons on the 'start' tool bar are small.

It's weird - when I print something (I use wordpad) the type is the right size.

When the screen displays the contents of my disk, (drive A), the type is the right size.

I hope somebody can tell me what is going on.

What is a video card, and how do I know if I have an up-to-date one?

For the Start menu right click on the Start button then click Properties. Click on Start Menu tab then the Customize button. Uncheck the box Show Small Icons in Start menu. Clcik OK > OK.

What browser(s) are you using?

What is a video card, and how do I know if I have an up-to-date one?

The video card has nothing to do with your problem. Ignore the advice about updating the graphics drivers.

My browser is FF 1.5

Re: your directions to unclick small icons in the start tool bar-
if I do that, where will the icons go?

I want the icons there. What I can't remember is how to make the start bar wider. My icons used to be on the left, in two horizontal lines, instead of one long horizontal line.

Your icons will remain, they will just be bigger.

As for getting your Start menu back to double rows right click the Start button, click Properties, click on the Start Menu tab then check the Start menu option at the top instead of Classic Start menu. Click the Customize button and uncheck the small icon option so you can have the larger icons. You can also select what programs you want to show in the Start Menu.

I am not postive with setting font size with Fireflop (I stopped using it back at version 1.02).

Open Fireflop, go to Tools > Options > Content tab > Advnced Fonts & Colors. You can select the font style and size. With a 1024x768 screen I set my minimum/maximum font size to 14. I also prefer Tahoma or Verdana font style.
