ok, so vista looks awful purty, but for all my knowledge of windows xp, i get the shaft in vista. things are moved around & renamed. i did an upgrade from windows xp, leaving many files intact. the upgrade was succsessful (surprisingly), but now those files marked as hidden (financials & the like), i cannot seem to figure out how to unhide... anyone know the trick?

I'd suspect that you'd have to take ownership in order to grant yourself permission to modify the attributes of these files.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

Do you mean you had them hidden in XP before the upgrade? Otherwise, if you do own the files, the procedure is the same as XP. First, from Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options /View -- Show hidden files. Then right click the file/folder in question.select Properties an uncheck the "hide" option, if not already done.
If you want to take ownership, there are several ways. My chosen way is to right click the file/properties/security/Advanced/Owner. Choose Edit and selct yourself as the owner. Acknowledge the prompts. Now back out to the first window and select edit. Select, once again, the owner you have just chosen and make sure all the squares are marked. Apply and OK. You may now find you can manipulate your files a little easier.
If you still have problems with the above, in either OS's, repeat the prcedure but create a new owner, if not already available "everyone" and give that owner all privileges.
