Hey there

So I just noticed randomly that windows task manager seems to have changed... when i hit ctrl alt del, it comes up as usual, but the windows is different. for example, it no longer says file, help etc, along the top... there is no X in the upper right corner... it is just a box with a grey border...

i can still type CTRL + TAB to cycle through the different options in windows task manager (e.g. running processes, running applications, cpu usage, local area connection info)

whats going on here? everything else seems to be running fine... i just hope that this isnt a sign of something else happening...

What was the last serious action you took at your system? I mean any instalations, registry cleaning... anything?

try to do a repair with sfc/scannow and have your XP pro disc ready since it will need to copy those files from the disc. Here is an excellent tutorial on that subject.

Just double-clicking on the border, as GameSky suggested, should restore the Task Manager, to it's original state.

hELLO OUT THERE,

Have similar problem & will do double click on border to get back full window (now that I've learned that trick) but another problem I have when trying to end a task that's hung up is, all of a sudden I get these little green windows just charging across the system tray on the bottom? They generally stop after about 24 downloads but sometimes I can't close them fast enough & have to do a what I call a "hard" shut off (I shut the tower down fast & cold at the main ON/OFF button/switch - I know this is a very harmfull proceedure but when this happens, its the only thing I can think of). What is causing this & how can I correct it? I know what's happening (the selected Ends Task Windows just keeps re-loading) just how can I stop it from starting when alls I'm doing is just trying to stop a program that's having problems getting started?

System is Windows XP/Home on a Compaq/Presario.

Thanks....

Hi guncptn! Could you please post a separate topic for your issue? Although your problem may be similar to colinweadick's - this is a separate issue and it's best to treat it separately.

I'd suspect that the little green windows are the icons for the Task Manager. Could it be that you've tried to open Task Manager a bunch of times and the computer is just being slow in responding to you? If this is the case, you should see multiple instances of taskmgr.exe in the Processes tab.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
