I want to get an illuminating keyboard. Does it have any disadvantages to a regular keyboard?

Yeah, watch how bright they are - I have one with blue LEDs for the caps lock/num lock/scroll lock buttons - man they are bright. They can be a little distracting....

Bright is good, because my living room has no overhead light. This makes typing at night quite difficult.

By illuminated, do you mean backlit (like a laptop) or LEDs? If backlit is what you mean, then I can't see any real disadvantages. Most likely it would receive it's power through the USB cable, so you should be OK.

I think backlight shows the keys with light, led has a few lights for caps-lock, num-lock, that kinda stuff.

In a room with poor lighting, you have to be carefull that the light from your keyboard won't reflect to harshly on your monitor.

You might consider a small desk lamp (one with an adjustable arm like these HERE to give you an idea, although you can probably find cheaper ones!), and use a soft white 40W bulb so it's not over powering. I did this next to my computer, and actually have the light facing upwards towards the ceiling so that I get indirect lighting. Easier on the eyes and I can still see my monitor clear as day!

T, if that's the case, I want a backlit keyboard.

Stevealmighty, I have an LCD monitor, and my keyboard is on a rollout drawr that is usually only pulled out half way at night, because I have a cat sitting in my lap. This would make the keyboard light reflecting off the monitor a non-issue. I had a desk-top lamp, but the dog chased one of my cats to the desk, and the lamp became airborn. Now I need a new bulb.

By LED, I was talking about this.
They are ALWAYS way brighter than what they appear in the photos - the light comes from around the sides of the keys, rather than from behind each individual letter...

The G15 sounds good - you can control the brightness.....

What about this?

Jobs done then! They are an Australian company, but might ship international.... I'm sure you could go to the manufacturer's website, however and see who they supply...
