My laptop has slowed considerably in recent weeks. All programs are very slow to open and changing from one window to another takes ages. Booting up can take 15 minutes before the computer is ready to open a program.

The AVG program used to take 30 to 40 minutes to scan about 60,000 objects, now it takes 80 minutes to scan 90,000 objects. Spybot used to do a complete check in about 20 minutes and it now takes several hours.

I have tried the following:

Empty recycle bin.

Delete temporary internet files.

Checked my Zone Alarm fire wall for updates and operation. Checked that Windows Firewall is turned off.

Update and run AVG, Ad-aware and Spybot. Ad-aware seems to work ok and always identifies objects for deletion. AVG rarely finds a problem and is really slow now. Also, when updating, it asks for a reboot whereas before a popup screen would appear showing the update progress and the popup screen would close down automatically 30 seconds after it finished updating.

Uninstalled and re-installed Spybot because Spybot takes several hours to scan now, whereas it used to take 20 or 30 minutes. The re-install made no difference!

Installed and run Eusing registry cleaner and CleanUp! several times.

Run Windows update.

Defragmented the hard disk.

Used the Error-checking tool to check for file system errors and bad sectors on the hard disk.

Increased the size of the Virtual Memory because I was getting error message to say Virtual Memory too low.

Installed Housecall Anti Virus and run once.

Installed McAfee AVERT Stinger and run once.

I do not know why there are now 90,000 objects for AVG to scan whereas before there were only 60,000 objects. The only program that has been added recently is Adobe Contribute but the computer was already running slow before I installed that new program.

Hope you can help. My logfile below:

Welcome khun barry

Download NGenFix:
http://download.norman.no/public/NGenFix.exe
Disconnect from the internet, close any running programs.
Disable your current antivirus program (don't forget to re-enable it once this scan has finished).
Double click on the NGenFix icon on your desktop.
There's no need to change any of the preconfigured scan selections in the top window [Scan areas].
Click on the 'Start scan' button.
Allow the scan to run until it's finished, don't cancel it,your pc will reboot if you do.
Restart your pc when it's finished.

********************

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click 'Select All' found at the bottom of the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
Click Firefox at the top and choose 'Select All' from the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.
NOTE:
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click 'No' at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser,do this also:
Click Opera at the top and choose 'Select All' from the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.
NOTE:
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click 'No' at the prompt.

Click 'Exit' on the Main menu to close the program.

*******************

Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

You should copy/print the following because you need to be in Safe Mode from here on.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE" using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
* Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
* Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
* Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
* Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
* Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
* Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
* When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
* Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
* When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
* Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
* Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
* Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
* Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
* After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

*******************
Edit:
Combofix canned fix removed by RichieUK.

Post the DrWeb.cvs report, and a new Hijackthis log into your next reply.
Let me know how your pc is running now please.

Many thanks for your help RichieUK. And thanks too for your clear and easy to follow instructions. I am posting the reports and logfile now and will post again after I reboot to let you know if there is any improvement in my computer.

Dr.Web Cureit did find three copies of the same object: "Mona.joke" which it could not cure so I moved them as you described. (My daily run of AVG and Ad-Aware did not pick up this object):

mona.exe;C:\Documents and Settings\Khun Barry\My Documents\My Files\i. Personal Documents - Shay;Joke.Mona;Incurable.Moved.;
mona.exe;C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Files\i. Personal Documents - Shay;Joke.Mona;Incurable.Moved.;
mona.exe;C:\My Documents\My Files\i. Personal Documents - Shay;Joke.Mona;Incurable.Moved.;

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

The following entries are optional but will certainly help at system startup.

Golly RichieUK, you are quick to reply!

I ran my AVG program to see if there was any improvement and by the time I logged back in to Bleeping Computer, I find that you have already sent new instructions!

Anyway, there was not really any improvement in performance after the first round of tests, but I will work my way through your second lot of instructions and let you know how it goes.

I won't be able to do this for a few days, as I'm leaving now for Bangkok, but will do so as soon as I return.

Thank you so much for your assistance.

RichieUK, I have implemented all of your instructions and there is a definite improvement in the speed of the bootup.

Also, after the computer has been running for a few hours, it works quite well. But it beavers away at doing something for quite a while after bootup, the green light blinking constantly, even though I haven't started any programs.

The number of objects scanned by AVG has fallen from over 90,000 back to about 65,000 which is where it was before the slowdown. However, today and yesterday the AVG program took 75 minutes to scan for viruses, whereas it used to do the job in about 40 minutes. There is also a change in the way AVG updates: now I have to reboot the computer for the update to take effect.

Spybot is slow too. Last night it took about 5 hours to scan the computer. Before the slowdown, it used to take about half an hour.

I can live with these inconveniences, but would be grateful for any further suggestions.

Thank you very much for your assistance. It is much appreciated, especially in my current location.

..... and one other thing.

I worked through Grinler's checklist "How did I get infected" and installed Spyware Blaster as recommeded.

Then I followed his tutorial instruction on the Tools, Hosts Safe tab:

"Hosts Safe: This tool is one that I recommend that most users use at least once. This will back up your HOSTS file, which is commonly used by Hijackers, to an encrypted file that can be restored from at a later date. Please use this tool at least once.

When I tried to Create New Backup, I got a popup which read "No Hosts File Detected"

I don't know if this is relevant to my slow computer problem?

Download the free trial version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0:
http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/trial-versions.php
Disconnect from the internet.
Uninstall AVG Antivirus via Add\Remove Programs, then reboot.
Install Kaspersky,reconnect to the internet.
Update Kaspersky's virus definitions and run a full system virus scan.
Let me know how you get on please.

I have uninstalled AVG (I had to do it twice as the first time I checked "Remove user settings" and "Including objects in the Virus Vault" and it refused to uninstall).

I installed Kaspersky Anti-Virus and did a full system virus scan with the following result:

not found: virus Email-Worm.Win32.Zhelatin.o Email message attachment: Outlook\Personal Folders\Top of Personal Folders\Junk Mail\[From:Valenzuela C. Cecily][Subject:[SPAM] A Day in Bed Coupon][Time:2007/02/04 14:31:23]/Flash Postcard.exe
not found: virus Email-Worm.Win32.Zhelatin.ab Email message attachment: Outlook\Personal Folders\Top of Personal Folders\Junk Mail\[From:Reyna Arabella][Subject:[SPAM] Fly Away Valentine][Time:2007/02/14 06:01:45]/Greeting Postcard.exe
deleted: virus Email-Worm.Win32.Zhelatin.o Email message attachment: Outlook\Personal Folders\Top of Personal Folders\Junk Mail\[From:Valenzuela C. Cecily][Subject:Message is infected : [SPAM] A Day in Bed Coupon][Time:2007/02/04 14:31:23]/Flash Postcard.exe
deleted: virus Email-Worm.Win32.Zhelatin.ab Email message attachment: Outlook\Personal Folders\Top of Personal Folders\Junk Mail\[From:Reyna Arabella][Subject:Message is infected : [SPAM] Fly Away Valentine][Time:2007/02/14 06:01:45]/Greeting Postcard.exe

An Zapersky Anti-Virus popup advised that these infections could not be treated and offered to delete them, which I did.

I will reboot my computer and let you know if there is any improvement in bootup and operation.

There is certainly an improvement in the operation of my laptop, with programs opening and closing normally, once the computer has warmed up.

The bootup is still a lengthy process with the computer working away at doing something long after the full Desktop is displayed. While this is happening, I find it best not to try to open any programs, as then they will take ages to open.

As I mainly use the laptop at home, I am leaving it in standby mode instead of shutdown to avoid having to boot it up every time. This seems to work ok.

I really appreciate the advice and instructions you have given me.
