I think I may have accidentally downloaded a virus? I haven't ever had one before and do not know all of the lingo that goes w/ this, but i really need some help. I get system alerts that malware threats are on my computer. a back door trojan? I found an ActiveX object 2.07 but when I go to remove it, it says I should restart my pc first. I have no clue what to do. I even ran some of my security check thingys, i think it was norton and a something from microsoft, but they didn't find the problem. What should i do? Plz w/ sugar on top can someone help me. thanks so much.

Do you recognize any of these? If not, please describe in detail the popup that gives you the warning or what you see when clicking on the balloon.

Not really recognizing anything from those, but there are similarities i guess. I am getting a pop up that says system alert:malware threats. says my computer is infected with a back door trojan. when i click it it takes me to a malware removal site. also have another alert happening w/ a question mark when i click it, it takes me to spydawn site. When i open my browser it takes me to another security site. hope this helps.
Oh i downloaded hijack this and ran it. i started a post over there too. Should i put my hijack info in here?

Went back and looked at your list...The second one does seem a lot like the problem i'm having. Like I said I'm not very pc literate...so took me a second to understand what it was saying.

No, don't make any changes to your computer until you hear from the Hijack This team.

Try ano of the programs in my sig. Be aware that Norton is not remoable simply by using the add/remove programs feature. There is a special way to completely remove it from your system. Check BC's Norton removal guide

Furthermore in the freeware section ( in my sig) you will see a full list of free security programs. In case of questions do not hesitate to post back.

As for paid AV I have Panda Security in one of my office. Had it a couple years there as I originally bought a long term subscription. I find it works very well with minimum effoert and low resource consumtion.
As for everywhere elso tho I have been running free apps, I 'll list them. The major difference in free/paid is you must update at regular intervals (I do it weekly). The rule of thumb in security is 1 AV,1 Firewall (preferaably not Windows firewall) and several layers of spy/adware protection. Further one should run their scans from Safe Mode.
My list (all free) and found in the BC Freeware replacements list. There are also Tutorials on how to use them. But you can always just ask if you prefer.

Antivirus. . AVG antivirus 7.5 ... http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Firewall. . Comodo Personal ... http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

spy/adware protection

AdAware

SpyBot S&D great at preventing browser hijacks, virus and spyware
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Spywareblaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SuperAntiSpyware (Free Home User version) One of the best Trojan and spyware killers
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE

AS you go along an excellent tool is the Hosts File. Read and learn how to use it from this BC tutorial
The Hosts File and what it can do for you
Good luck
