I loaned my laptop to a co-worker and he brought it back it seems real slow.
I ran system restore to before he used it.
It seems like it's doing something in the background as I wait and wait.

HP 4560, Win XP Home, Athalon XP2500, 446mb ram, radeon IGP 320m
Windows Defender, CA EZ Antivirus.
I scanned with adaware and no objects

Sorry for the delayed response.

Nothing malware related in your log.
Here is a couple of Slow Computer Checklist links:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6.0 windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Thank You for the reply, I followed the instructions and removed and installed the newest Java.

I will follow those two checklist links next.

I downloaded Startup inspector for Windows and it identified a program (cftmon.exe) as malware running at startup so I attempted to remove it then restarted but am not sure it's gone. BC I can still see it on my list of registry run in Startup inspector for Windows (although not checked).

Are you sure about the spelling? cftmon would be a malware but ctfmon may or may not.

When you run a Microsoft Office XP program, the file Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon) runs in the background, even after you quit all Office programs.
Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies. The file is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32, which was the case in your log. Located elsewhere, ctfmon.exe would be a virus, spyware, trojan or worm! Yours is the right spelling and in the right place.
