Hi All,
I could use some help. I recently purchased a new machine that's giving me one problem. When I start it up I continue to get the same error message everytime. This error message pops-up about 10 times before it goes away. I'm not sure if it's relevent to this problem, but I used a third party file, settings and program transfer software.

My message goes like this. First window opens.

Window title - microsoft visual c ++ runtime library
error message - runtime error
program c:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe
this application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. please contact application support.

Once I click ok in the first window the second window opens and I get this message.

Window title - msiexec.exe - application error
error message - the exception unknow software exception (0x40000015) occurred in the application at location (0x781346b6).

As i said above this happens about 10 times then stops.

I also get this message when tiring to run microsoft updates, but only when it try's to update office 2003. those updates fail and i get the error message.

Hope someone can make sense of this request for help. thx.

The first thing that I'd try would be this free, online scan: http://safety.live.com.

The next thing to try would be SFC.EXE - here's a link to a guide on it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/43051/how-to-use-sfcexe-to-repair-system-files/

Then I'd try this free utility to reregister the dll's for the Windows Installer: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#Standard_version

Did any particular one work for you? Or was it the combination of all of them?

IMO it's most likely an infection of some sort. Try these free, online scans for starters:

http://safety.live.com
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Let us know the results and we can move on from there.

You may want to post a HiJackThis log in this forum: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/

Please read the pinned topics and instructions before posting your logfile.

hey usasma
i run the housecall trendmicro scan. it came up with 12 http cookies (which it cleaned) 1 spyware TSPY_LDPINCH (which it cleaned) and 2 vulnerabilities (ms05-004) ASP.NET path validation vulnerability (887219) also (ms06-071) vulnerability in microsoft xml core services could allow remote code execution
(928088). trendmicro scan said these vulnerabilities would need to be remove manually. i'm not computer savvy enough to know how this should be done.

Great! I think that you'll end up better off with the HJT log being scanned. There's just too much that shouts "virus" to me - although I'm not an expert with the HJT logs.
