Hello - I wonder if anyone can help me please. I picked up what I think is smitfraud-c.toolbar888 - at least that's what spybot has identified it as. It is bringing up lots of pop-ups - many of them about virus products. It seems to have attached itself to various places - including the system32\rundll.32.exe file which I delete and then reinstall. I've run the various virus and spyware products identified in your prepration guide and also a smitfraudfix program. I'd be ever so grateful if someone was able to give me any help or advice on this. Many thanks in anticipation.

Hello Riddles,

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you.

What version of Spybot are you running? Have you updated it before you ran it? :flowers:

*************************

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

    *************************

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune DO NOT run it yet.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (formerly Ewido)
This is a 30 day trial of the program

AVG Anti-Spyware is designed to be used to both scan for and remove malicious files and also to run in real-time alongside, but not replace, your existing anti-virus program to give an added layer of protection.
Both the Resident Shield and Automatic Updates will only be available for the thirty day trial period, after that AVG Anti-Spyware will revert to a stand-alone scanner which you can keep and manually update for free and use in a similar way to Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D etc.

    1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
    2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
    3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
    4. Accept the default installation path: C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click "Next", then click "Install".
    5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
    6. The main "Status" menu will appear. You can select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Sheild' and 'Automatic Updates'. If you choose to do this, then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
    7. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
    8. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method so Windows will start with minimal drivers and running processes.
To do this restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

1.) Double-click the small BLUE Garbage Can ATF-Cleaner.exe file to run the program.
2.) At the top, under Main choose: Select All
3.) Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use the Firefox browser:
1.) At the top, click Firefox and choose: Select All
2.) Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use the Opera browser:
1.) At the top, click Opera and choose: Select All
2.) Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 as follows:

    1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.

Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.

Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).

Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).

Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".

    2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
    3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.

    4. IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.

Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    (1)
, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    (2) At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button.
    (3) When done, click the Save Scan Report button.
    (4) Click the Save Report as button.
Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt.

  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt, AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 log and a new [b]HiJackThis log.

Hello - and firstly thank you so much for trying to help me with this and for your rapid response - it is much appreciated. Secondly, I think that I have messed up a bit on the instructions you gave as I ended up deleting rather than quarantining the results on the AVG scan. Please let me know if I need to redo any of this.

I have checked my version of Spybot and this is 1.4 - and I have checked whether there were any updates and it found no updates.

The contents of the Vundotxt are;

I'm sorry if the quarantine mistake I made causes a problem - I did go back and run the AVG again - having also re-run the ATF cleaner (I did this prior to doing the vundofix part) and the AVG log that resulted from the second run is shown below;

Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Don't use the windows start\search feature
Using Windows Explorer, find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files/folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\Program Files\dr.exe <==file

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot to the Normal Mode , post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hello again - and thank you for all your help. Could you please explain what you mean by "select the following with HijackThis" - I'm not sure how I go about selecting items with it.

Many thanks

Hello - its me agian! You must be some kind of genius to understand all this stuff!

I did all of the things in your most recent posting. I was not able to locate a file named C:\Program Files\dr.exe - and I'm fairly sure that I was looking in the right place and I did all of the unchecking etc as you described.

As far as the web-browsing is concerned I havent had any pop-ups and things seem to be running well. I havent done a full virus check since doing all of this - before doing the latest stuff I was picking up something called Trojan Horse Lop.Aw on a windows system32 file - and I've just scanned this folder with AVG Anti-Virus and it didnt detect any threat.

What do you think? Is there anything else that you think I should do - i was considering doing some on-line banking later if you think it would now be safe?

Look forward to your diagnosis

Best regards

Hello - I'm sorry but I think that I didnt check one of the files in the HijackThis log when I "fixed" them before - namely 020 - Winlogon Notify: vtsqn - C:WINDOWS\system32\vtsqn.dll(filemissing). I thought that in your listing this was part of the previous file with the very long name as I couldnt see the whole of the name on the screen.

Sorry - I'm new to all this! What should I do next?

Hi Riddles,

Looks like you missed one item.

In Normal Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtsqn - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqn.dll (file missing)

Run CCleaner to delete the temp files.

Reboot your computer.

Let's do one more scan to make sure we got everything. :flowers:

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

In addition when the DrWeb scan was taking place I got a number of alerts showing threats being detected by my resident antivirus AVG - on each occassion I sent them to the AVG virus vault and have copied the contents of that below.

Hi Riddles,

Your log looks clean! Good job on the cleanup!

Let's reset you files so they are hidden and protected.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect Show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!

Hello again - I've followed your most recent instructions. I cannot get over how brilliant your response has been - clearly you know a huge amount about these things - but even more amazing is the way that the instructions you have been sending are so clear. Those of us who are still a bit worried about delving into the deeper parts of our computer systems need to have that clear step-by-step approach.

One thing I was surprised about was all the things that came up when we were running the drweb stuff - was that all ok?

Do you think that I can go back on web reasonably safely now?

Thank you for all your efforts.

Hi Riddles,

One thing I was surprised about was all the things that came up when we were running the drweb stuff - was that all ok?

All is OK. It found SmitfraudFix (a malware removal tool) which it deleted and the rest of the malware was in your System Restore folder (which it deleted).
Windows backs up every deleted file in the System Restore folder in case you want to restore it.
We deleted everything in the System Restore folder by setting a new set point, so now it is now clear.

Do you think that I can go back on web reasonably safely now?

Yes, your computer is safe to use. :flowers:
