Hi jacksalterego,

You've got a nasty that is fairly new that we would like to get a closer look at so I hope you're still with us. Give me a few minutes and I'll have some instructions for you on how to get rid of it.

Please do these steps in the order that they are given, this is important.

 Open HijackThis.

If you still have the New Users Quickstart screen enabled, click Open Misc Tools Section.
If you just have the regular opening screen, click the Config... button then the Misc Tools button.

Now click the Open Uninstall Manager button, then the Save List button. Save the list somewhere convenient like My Documents and then the list will open in Notepad. Copy and Paste that list into your next reply to this post.

:flowers: Now hit the Back button down toward the bottom right under Other Stuff.

Click Scan and when complete, put a check next to the following entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbssm32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbssm32.exe

Close all other windows so that only HijackThis is on your desktop and Taskbar and click Fix checked then exit HijackThis.

 Download KillBox from here:

KillBox

Unzip the folder to your desktop.

* Start Killbox.exe
* Select the Delete on Reboot option.
* Click on the All Files button.
* Copy the complete text in bold below to the clipboard by highlighting the filepaths and pressing Control + C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbssm32.exe
c:\windows\system32\mbsrm32.exe

* Go to the File menu of Killbox, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
NOTE: You must use the File menu--pasting by right-clicking the mouse will only enter one file.
* Click the Delete File button that is a red-and-white X. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

* After rebooting, open up Killbox again. Click File -> Logs -> Actions History Log
* Post this log in your next reply.

 Make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Then click on the following link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php

Please fill out all the requested information, browse to the following folder in bold and click the Submit File button:

C:\!KillBox

Also see if you have the following folder present and repeat the process to submit it as well if so:

C:\Program Files\MSTemplate

 Your Java is out of date making your system vulnerable to infection.

Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have this icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
 Scan again with HijackThis and post a new log.

So in your next post I need to see these logs in this order:

Uninstall List
KillBox
HijackThis

If you have any questions or problems along the way let me know. There will be some more tasks to do.

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso

Thanks for submitting the files, jacksalterego. Problem is they showed up as zero bytes, which is probably my fault. We'll try a different way in just a bit.

Has your popup gone away now? The startup reg entry has come back but I believe it is just an orphan and we'll fix it again with HijackThis and see if it goes away.

Scan again with HijackThis and put a check next to the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbssm32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbssm32.exe

Close all other windows so that only HijackThis is on your desktop and Taskbar and click Fix checked then exit HijackThis and reboot.

Then scan again with HijackThis and post a new log.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with the new HijackThis log.

Now go back to C:\!KillBox and see if these files are there:

mbssm32.exe
mbsrm32.exe

If so, please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the files I've just listed above, then click Submit. You will only be able to have one file scanned at a time. Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

Do the same at Virustotal. You may need to go here first as jotti is often very busy.

Download this program:

submit files packer

Highlight the files listed below in bold (if they exist) and right-click and select copy.

C:\!KillBox\mbssm32.exe
C:\!KillBox\mbsrm32.exe

Then start the file packer program and right click in the white box and select paste to paste the copied file names in the field.

Then press the Continue button.

It will create an archive with these files and a small log on your Desktop that starts with a name like requested-file[date].cab.

Rename this file to jacksalterego.cab--make sure that you still have hidden files and the file estension showing and that there is only one .cab extension.

Then go to:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php
and fill in the required fields and browse to this file on your desktop. Finally click on the Send File button.

I don't see anything in the Add/Remove list that looks as if it relates to this infection. If you could let me know of anything in there that you don't recognize or that you know was added when the infection occured, let me know.

I sure appreciate your help on this. There are a few other Items you'll need to attend to when we get a better handle on if this infection is gone and what all it takes to completely remove it.

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso

Hi Papakid,

Thank you for all your help so far, it's much appreciated.

The pop-up didn't appear on restarting last time. As requested I have attached the following files.

Hope that is everything.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the files, got it OK. A couple more things to do if you don't mind to help us out.

Try submitting the C:\Program Files\MSTemplate folder again, but this time zip it up before submitting. If you are not sure how to zip a folder click the following link for a tutorial: How to create and extract a Zip File in Windows ME/XP/2003

My research indicates that what you had is not a virus and may have legitimate uses. You or someone who used your computer may have signed up for a service where it was unclear that payment was required, perhaps after a free trial. It basically is a nag and threatens to begin collections procedures against you. If we could find out what service you have supposedly signed up for, it will help us know who is using this software to demand payment and thus how you got this on your system in the first place. And you will know who is using these strong arm tactics against you.

Go to your start menu and look for an icon that looks like two blue boxes, one offset from the other. Click on that and you will be taken to the MBS site to your account and what you are supposed to be paying for. Post back what site you visited that sent you the bill or PM me if you think that information is too sensitive.

Your logs look OK otherwise. I recommend you also update Adobe Reader as older versions are vulnerable. Foxit Reader is an alternative to Adobe that is leaner, but Adobe 8 has slimmed down and changed quite a bit to become very similar to Foxit.

You also have MyWay installed which some consider spyware. I've not seen any proof of spying but it could be a drag on resources. If you would like to remove it go to Add/Remove the Control Panel and uninstall MyWay Search Assistant. If this is a Dell computer it may have come preinstalled, in which case you will need to take extra measures to uninstall. Just let me know and I will show you how.

Hi there,

Have submitted the file MSTemplate again as requested.

Apparently the MBS Bill is from a website called SeXXXPASSPORT. This is slightly concerning as this is certainly not something that should have been accessed.

This problem only occured after stupidly using an unsecured network with little virus/spyware protection.

Can you please advise how this could have happened and what can be done.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the info, jacksalterego. Knowing what site will help a lot in knowing how to fight this. It appears to be a variant of this.

One of our analysts will probably visit that site to see exactly what the attack vector is--I myself am not equipped to do so. It is a little early to say, but it appears that just visiting that site caused the infection, the Prevx info classifies it as an exploit. That generally means that there is a vulnerability in either Windows or other browser/internet related program. To prevent it happening again in the future, make sure you keep Windows updated. Also keep your office applications up to date and visit this site fairly often to make sure that browser/internet related apps that are commonly exploited are up to date: Secunia Software Inspector

You can also put www.sexxxpassport.com in your Restricted Sites zone in Internet Explorer, tutorial here: Making Internet Explorer Safer

Also be sure to install SpywareBlaster, it is one of the most effective prevention measures you can take. It already blocks that site's ActiveX control, but at the moment doesn't put it in restricted sites. A link to it and other preventative measures can be found here:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

How you got to that site is hard to say, but it is most likely that someone clicked a link somewhere to get to that site. At first glance one would think it was because of surfing porn, but there could be other explanations. These people are accomplished at showing up in search results and being deceptive. If you have any recollection of visiting that site and how you got there, or if someone else had access to your computer, that would be very helpful as well.

Sorry, but the MSTemplate folder came in a zero bytes again. Are you sure you had it zipped up? That may be because something inside the folder is running. For now could you open that folder and tell me if there are any files inside and post back their names--if there aren't too many of them.

I would also like to search for some bits and pieces that may still be present on your system if you are still willing. Please do the following:

Download Registry Search.

- Create a new folder on your desktop named Regsearch
- Extract regsearch.zip file to the newly created folder.
- Open the Regsearch folder and double click regsearch.exe to start the program.
- Use copy and paste to enter the following bold text to search for and click OK--paste each line one at a time in seperate lines in Regsearch.

{0BFB39F6-4277-480F-AF1D-AC8ED392B864}
{D2FAC024-92C0-42E5-A75B-7B4E3915CC50}
u2g.f
MBSInstaller

- Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file will also be saved in the Regsearch folder as well).

Post this text in your next reply.

Let's also clean up your temp files. Best results would be to run this in Safe Mode

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

To remove MyWay, go to START>Run and copy and paste the following bold text in the Run box and press Enter:

msiexec.exe /x {78d944d7-a97b-4004-ab0a-b5ad06839940}

Then in Add/Remove uninstall MyWay Search Assistant.

Scan again with HijackThis and fix these lines if still present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll

Reboot when done and delete the following folder in Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA

Then post another HijackThis log please.

OK, see you when you get back--this thread is not concluded anyway so don't worry about it being closed.

When you do get back please follow the instructions in my last post. We're especially interested in the MSTemplate folder. If you could confirm that you tried zipping it and had problems please describe what happened or if you need help with instructions. Did you try it using WinRAR or the in house XP archiver mentioned in the instructions I linked you to?

You can also delete these files if present and let us know if they are there and if any problems with the deletion.

C:\!KillBox
C:\WINDOWS\system32\u2g.f
C:\WINDOWS\system32\UBSauthenticateAXC.ocx
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Sexxxpassport.ico
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winiconmon.ico
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winiconmon.ico.bak0

Also please post fresh HijackThis and ComboFix logs.
