i had to try and run hjt from the desktop, as i believe some malware is preventing me from running it from elsewhere.... i also could not keep the program or the log file open, but i managed to ctrl c this before it shut down on me. thanks in advance.

i should also mention that i was unable to restart in safe mode for some reason.

also, i am certain that the guy who i am helping clicked on some msn delivered malware link.

i'm back on my own comp now though yay.

hi dave, my friend still does need help, but i have to travel to his house to try and run the hjt program again- if you can make fixes with this log i can help him over the phone, if not, i'll post again when i can get to his house. thanks.

Hi again,

Okay, we can try to work from the old log for the moment, but these instructions are pretty detailed. You might refer him to this topic so he can see and print them for himself.


Please print these instructions as we will be going into Safe Mode.

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

I see that you are running one or more Peer-to-Peer file sharing programs. These things are dangerous, even if they do not install spyware themselves. The first rule of safe internet use is, Never download a file unless you know and trust the source. By their very design these programs put files on your computer from unknown sources. They are a prime means of spreading viruses and other malware.

Consider whether the use of these programs is worth the risk. Please read this article for more information.

If you choose to continue using P2P in spite of the risks, at least disable the programs until we are sure your machine is clean.

Okay, first thing to do, Unhide files and folders:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Click Start, My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
6. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
8. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close out My Computer.
9. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
Download Hoster
Unzip hoster to an own folder, e.g. C:\Hoster
Start Hoster.exe, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK.

Now, open HijackThis and run a scan. Make sure no other windows are open on the desktop, and no programs other than HijackThis are listed in the taskbar. Place a check next to the following lines:

Click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Please download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from here
First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it
Once open, click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
Now click the "Reboot" Button.
After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4) please acknowledge them and continue.

A Message should popup from MsnVirRem if not, double click the program again and it will finish.

Now, boot into Safe Mode if you can do so. If not, tell me and we'll do this another way.

In Safe mode, navigate to and delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qyueedh <== folder
C:\WINDOWS\304.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\{F4887D1C-088F-1033-0520-040312230001}\Update.exe


If you don't find or can't delete any of them, let me know.

After deleting the files, reboot into Normal Mode.

Please Post the contents of C:\msnvirrem.log along with a fresh HijackThis log.

This is only the first stage. Even if you think the computer is running all right, please post those logs back here. Things can change in a week and there may be new malware by now.
