Hey all,

So I've been wrestling with this for much of last night and this morning. I've downloaded and run ad-aware, microsoft live onecare, spybot - search and destroy, spyware doctor and (sort of) hijackthis. They've all found stuff and have all removed stuff but most of it simply returns. I say 'sort of' when mentioning hijackthis because whatever it is shuts it down (automatically) as quick as it can such that I can just barely run it to get the logfile (it also closes the log's text file quickly such that I have to ctrl-a ctrl-c to get it on the clipboard and then paste it elsewhere). The three online virus scanners have all been blocked and/or whatever it is tells both firefox and IE to shut down when I try and access the sites (same happens if I try and search for hijackthis or go to hijackthis.de, etc.). The McAfee site you guys link to has also been blocked off. Also, when windows isn't in safemode regedit closes automatically. Any help you guys can provide would be ridiculously welcome!

Thanks much,
-M

Hello,

You are dealing with several different infections here.

Actually this doesn't suprise me at all, because I see you have no Antivirus and Firewall installed. :flowers:

Please perform my next steps in the right order..

Go to start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs and uninstall next if present:

Oin
Yazzle by Oin
YazzleActiveX By OIN
Purityscan by Oin
MediaTickets by OIN
Snowballwars by Oin
Cowabanga by OIN
or anything similar with Oin in it.

If OIN not listed, download and run this uninstaller.

Reboot when done! Really important!

After reboot,

Please Download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from one of the following mirrors.
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it
  • Once open, click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4) please acknowledge them and continue.
  • A Message should popup from MsnVirRem if not, double click the program again and it will finish
* Download: Hoster
Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\Hoster
Start Hoster.exe, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {F46656E0-B522-9CA7-5727-EB1BC17411C6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hohvutm.dll
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbgpsgqts\winlogon.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbgpsgqts\winlogon.exe
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F46656E0-B522-9CA7-5727-EB1BC17411C6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hohvutm.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sen] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\RACLE~1\wuauboot.exe" -vt yazb
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ggubzzvp] "C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew David Bean\My Documents\s?curity\?xplorer.exe" 99001122
O4 - Startup: winlogon.lnk = ?
O16 - DPF: {5CB1506E-1DEA-4E63-89A7-E40E52AEA1FD} (OnagerCtrl Class) - https://www.puretracks.com/onager.cab

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.

Please Post the contents of C:\msnvirrem.log along with a fresh HijackThis log and the Combofix log

Extra question..
What is this program? C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew David Bean\Desktop\Misc\ZenWin\zen3.exe

Edited... Updated the link for MSNVirrem, since other mirrors are not updated yet.

Hi,

I edited my previous post with the right link for MSNVirRem, because the other mirrors are not updated yet.

Hey Miekimoes,

We'd fiddled around with it some more and made some progress but upon receiving your instructions I followed them to the letter. Here are the resulting logfiles each separated by a line of *'s:

Hi,

Your hijackthislog looks clean again, but we'll still have to delete some folders manually.
They are hidden, so do next first..

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Please hide your hidden files and folders afterwards again, when we are done with this thread and your problems are solved, because above instructions to set your system to show all files, unhide legit files and folders as well.
And I don't want you to delete them because they may look suspicious. To hide them again, just perform the above instructions in the opposite way.

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\winlogon]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Delete next folders:

C:\WINDOWS\TWF0dGhldyBEYXZpZCBCZWFu
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbgpsgqts

Do you know what next folders are?

C:\DeusEx
C:\rh

Also, you forgot to answer my previous question about C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew David Bean\Desktop\Misc\ZenWin\zen3.exe
Can you tell me what it is?

Hey again,

Am following the directions to create the fix.reg file and it comes up with the proper filetype image but when I try to run it, it says that "fix.reg is not a valid Win32 application."

Also,

c:\rh is a small shooter game
c:\deusex is Deus Ex, a quite nifty fps/rpg
zen3.exe is a small program that comes up with interesting quips when the computer boots up

zen3 is from a pretty trusted source and has been there for a long time

The actual game Deus Ex I know is safe but this is a recent download, gotten from bittorrent so am not sure if that makes keeping it questionable or not

rayhound is also a fairly recent acquisition, have gotten a program from the same programmer previously with no problem so I'd be surprised if there was a problem with it but I suppose it can't be guaranteed

Thanks for the information about the 2 folders and zen3.exe

Concerning the regfix.. are you doing this in notepad? Because you can't use another texteditor for this. It has to be done in notepad.

Also, did you copy and paste REGEDIT4 on top?

Could be that your fileassociation is messed up as well.

If you doublechecked above and it still doesn't work, do next:

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox in it:

ftype regfile >> look.txt
start notepad look.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and notepad should open.
Copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply.
(In case you are unsure how to create a bat file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Yes, your fileassociation is not properly set for regfiles, regedit.exe is missing in it..

To fix this:

Go to start > run and type next commands in the field:

assoc .reg=regfile hit enter
ftype regfile=regedit.exe "%1" hit enter

there should be a space between assoc and .reg
there should be a space between regedit.exe and "%1"

Then try again if fix.reg opens as a txtfile (you should doubleclick it)
Let me know if that worked.

"Windows cannot find 'assoc'. Make sure you typed in the name correctly, and then try again."

Only typing the next line should work as well:
(the association wasn't really needed actually, since there is one set for regfile already)

ftype regfile=regedit.exe "%1"

Duh, I already see now...
I asked you to do it via start > run, but forgot to type cmd first to open the command prompt.

So, in start > run, type: cmd
That should open the command prompt (black window)
There you'll have to type the commands.

Ok! That appears to have worked.

The .reg file went through properly and the folders you asked me to delete have been deleted.

Also, have done another hijackthis scan and the log for it follows:
