Hi again Dave,

**You are missing an important program on that computer: An antivirus.
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer. Choose one of these free anti-virus programs:Install it and then run a full scan. Let it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove.

**IMPORTANT
It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorized traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and install one of these excellent (and free) products: Zone Alarm or Kerio
It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download both to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

**You are running HijackThis from a TEMP folder, which is not recommended.
The first thing we need to do is create a permanent folder for HijackThis:
Click My Computer > C:\
In the menu bar, File > New > Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to HJT or HijackThis. Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.
Now drag your HijackThis.exe & the backups folder from the TEMP directory into your C:\HJT folder. You can also create a shortcut for HijackThis which will give you easier access to it. Left-click HijackThis.exe, highlight Send To and hit Desktop (create shortcut).

Also, I noticed that you HijackThis log seems incomplete. Please run HijackThis and post the entire log here as a reply.

With your HijackThis log, can you please include an Uninstall Log.
To get an Uninstall log, open HijackThis > Config... > Misc Tools > Open Uninstall Manager > Save list and post the contents here with your HijackThis log.

So, I will need to see a new HijackThis log, an Uninstall Log, and also please post what specific problems you are experiencing.

Thanks,
Tink

Hi again Dave,

Sorry for the delay in response.

Thank you for the new logs, and I appreciate you taking the advice to install an antivirus & firewall.

I see you have Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2007 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs related to Viewpoint if present.

Also, please uninstall:
LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 1.7 (Symantec Corporation)

since it appears that you have removed Norton from your system.

(If you have any problems uninstalling LiveReg & Live Update, please let me know :flowers: )

Now, run HijackThis and check the boxes next to the following entries:

Optional Fix
The following entries in HijackThis point to an Alexa search engine:
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

While this is considered an optional fix, major spyware scanners flag and delete the above entries. Here is a link to Alexa’s privacy policy: http://www.alexa.com/site/help/privacy. If you did not install this yourself, I suggest you check the above entries in HijackThis also.

Close all other browsers and windows and hit ”Fix Checked”

If you decided to fix the Alexa entries within HijackThis...
Find and delete the file(s) in bold if they are still present:
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

(NOTE: Do not be alarmed if a file/folder on the list is not present on your system, please move on to the next file/folder on the list.)

Restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log.

Hi Dave,
Your log looks clean now. How are things running? System still slow? Were you able to uninstall the Symantec programs?

You do not have Service Pack 2 for XP installed, which is a CRITICAL part of keeping your system protected. I suggest you visit the Windows Update Site immediately.
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • You may find it easier to have windows automatically update! Here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.
  • Of course, you can always download updates separately at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
CCleaner

It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.

The tutorial for this program can be found here: http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=1504

Also see the article How did I get infected?. It provides you with programs and information to keep your system more secure.
