Everytime I start up Internet Exlporer on my computer my homepage is set to virushelpzone.com. I have changed the homepage many times, but it still takes me to virushelpzone.com. Recently, when I have started opening IE, multiple tabs will come up and take me to AOL search and in the search box things like "?????" and "?C????" will be there. Any help with this problem would be appreciated.

Here's my hijack this log:

Hi a likely story,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

1. I think you ran HijackThis in safe mode before posting. It's important that you are in Normal mode now since I want you to download several tools. If you're still in safe mode or if you're not sure please reboot to go back into Normal mode.

2. I can see that you disabled some items in your Startup through Msconfig. We need to see them because sometimes they can be malware.

Click Start > Run > type: msconfig > OK.
Select Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services.
Click OK. And when asked to restart, click No.

3. Unfortunately I see no firewall in your runing processes which probably means that you have none. I urge you to install one since it's your first defense against malware. There are several good but for free programmes available like:

Sygate
Kerio
Zone alarm

For a tutorial on Firewalls click: Understanding and Using Firewalls!

4. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

5. Download combofix.exe Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

6. Run HijackThis, click the Config... button, then go to the Misc Tools section and click Open Uninstall Manager. You'll see a list of programs; click on Save List...

The file "uninstall_list.txt" will be created. Copy and paste the contents of this file to your next reply.

7. You're using an outdated version of Java (latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0). Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

    Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0
Please post the uninstall_list.txt together with the Combofix report, the Smitfraud report and a fresh HijackThis log!

Hi a likely story, :flowers:

In step 1 I just want you to reboot so you're in Normal mode, if you're not already, in order to be able to download the tools in steps 3, 4 and 5 and the upload in step 7.

Please follow the steps in the right order.

Hi a likely story,

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Frank\Desktop and rename Hijackthis.exe to rename.exe and than reboot.
After reboot follow the steps I instructed.

Hi a likely story,

okay i think i got everything

Well done!!

1. Your log shows the very dangerous Trojan.SystemPoser and
Trojan.Banchan.IL are present on your computer!

These trojans also have backdoor functionalities. They may process the commands on the local machine giving remote users virtual control over the infected system.
It is possible that the remote attacker has added multiple backdoors and/or accounts or even rooted the computer.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

2. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following programs:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

> As you can see Kazaa is considered Unsafe and with respect to Morpheus you should be cautious!
So please remove:

Kazaa 3.2.6
Morpheus 5.2 (remove only)
Morpheus Toolbar

> Also, you are running LimeWire. Multiple versions of LimeWire include spyware. I highly recommend uninstalling it and replacing it with a clean P2P program. You can find a list of clean P2P programs here!

Of course it's up to you since this one is optional but I recommend to uninstall this program as well:

LimeWire 4.12.4

> Finally your Add/Remove screen shows Viewpoint Media player is installed. Viewpoint is classed as Foistware and a Potentially unwanted program as its sometimes installed without the users consent. There maybe some indications that they will move into tracking users at some stage which you can read more about here.. If you value the service they provide then it can be left on the system but if not then it can be removed using the Add/Remove screen.

Viewpoint Media Player

3. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Do not run it yet.

4. You already have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 on your computer. Launch it and click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. Do not run it yet.

5. You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

6. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {47E713AB-A469-AE91-4C03-A958127BF7E9} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sredgyc.dll

O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe
O4 - Startup: Morpheus.lnk = C:\Program Files\Morpheus\Morpheus.exe

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

7. Make sure you can view all files. Click Start >My Computer > Tools > Folder Options >View. Check "Show hidden files and folders", uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types". Click "Apply to all folders" >Apply then OK.

8. Reboot again into Safe mode.

9. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following folders in bold if listed:

C:\Program Files\Kazaa
C:\Program Files\W?nSxS
C:\Program Files\MorpheusBar < if agreed
C:\Program Files\LimeWire < if agreed
C:\Program Files\Morpheus < if agreed

C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3dx9_26.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pe.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pushow55.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\etc.exe

Please let me know how this went.

10. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

11. Run AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 now and click on the Scanner tab at the top
  • Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and ensure that Automatically generate report after every scan is selected and uncheck "Only if Threats are found"
  • Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan.
This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
12. Open Notepad and copy and paste the following text in the quotebox into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{b66575ee-3cf9-11db-9469-0014a5ae73aa}]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run]

[-HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\{b66575ee-3cf9-11db-9469-0014a5ae73aa}]

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Please reboot and post the AVG report together with the Smitfraud report and a fresh HijackThis log.
