You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HiJackThis – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfigh] c:\temp\svchost.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [only23] C:\WINDOWS\SCVHOST.exe

O23 - Service: Active HelpAssistant - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\IIS\iisset

O23 - Service: Indexing Helps (Indexingbox) - Unknown owner - %WINDIR%\system\svchest.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: Indexing Helper (Indexingboxs) - Sydinar Software - c:\temp\svchost.exe

O23 - Service: regsnthelp - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\regst.exe

O23 - Service: mssupport (s-u) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: System Event Notificat - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\winlogon.exe (file missing)
=====================
Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find this exact name

Active HelpAssistant

Rightclick and choose "Properties". Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Click Apply then OK. File-Exit the Services utility.

Repeat the above for - Indexing Helper - regsnthelp - mssupport - System Event Notificat (Note the missing ion)
======================
DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip or
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

c:\temp\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SCVHOST.exe
C:\WINDOWS\IIS\iisset
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regst.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new hijack log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Download http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.zip and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
· Restart your computer
· After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
· Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
· Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
· Choose your usual account.
· In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
· Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
· Type Y to begin the script.
· It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
· Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
· When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
· Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
· Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum in your next reply.

Hi APS,

I have been asked to take over your log.

It looks like your symptoms are gone now, but you need to know that there was a backdoor trojan on your system. :thumbsup: For a description please look here.

I don't know exactly what this machine is used for, but as you can see from the Sophos write-up, this backdoor would allow a hacker to access it. You need to assess what steps you may need to take in response to this breach.

With a machine used in a business setting, an infestation by any sort of backdoor means the user must consider whether to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Please read the following link very carefully:

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Here are some more links to help you decide:

Security Management - May 2004
Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community...gmt/sm0504.mspx

Security Management - July 2004
Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do? Part II
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community...gmt/sm0704.mspx

Only you can make this decision, you know the uses this computer has been put to. But please consider carefully before deciding against a reformat. If you do make that decision I will do my best to help you complete the disinfection process. However, you must understand that once a machine has been taken over by this type of malware, we can never be one hundred percent sure that it is clean.

If you choose to format and reinstall see this link for instructions:
http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/how-tos/reinstall-faq.html

Please let me know whatever decision you make.

Dave
