Hi,

I am here for a 2nd opinion on my ongoing issue with Internet Explorer crashing on me. The first opinion I recieved after undergoing many inconclusive tests etc... was that my computer is severely infected. I really hope that is not the case, so I would like another opinion.

Internet Explorer will open to my homepage (google) but when I try to navigate away, it sometimes will work for a short time, but most of the time it crashes right after my new page opens. The "Internet Explorer has encountered a program and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" message comes up. Previously (in early January), I would have to open internet explorer about 3 times (and have it crash 3 times) before I could get a 'stable' browser that wouldnt crash. However, it has gotten worse to where it is now.


I have followed the instructions given by the microsoft people (the link that comes up after I click the 'Send Error Report' button on the "Internet Explorer has encountered a program and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" box, except for the scanning of my computer using the scanner from Windows Live Safety Center, because it wont work with firefox.

I have deleted files found through 'internet options' in the IE tools. I also ran AdAware, which only finds cookies, which I delete each time. My virus scan using McAfee VirusScan enterprise 8.0.0 came up clean. In addition, I have run VundoFix.exe, which did not find anything to fix. I have run ATFCleaner multiple times on different occasions as well. Panda ActiveScan won't work, because my IE browser crashes upon entering that site. TrendMicro Housecall, which I used with both firfox and IE browsers always closes every window I have open, before it can show me what it found. My IE seems to like the TrendMicro site, as it does not crash consistently on it. I have installed AVG Anti-Spyware, but the scan came up clean. I tried to install WebRoot SpySweeper, but that would not install. Every time I would get an error box. I have also run McAfee Avert Stinger, and that came up clean as well.

My computer is a Dell, running Windows XP service pack 2. I have McAffee Personal Firewall Plus 7.1.113, and McAfee VirusScan enterprise 8.0.0.

I hope this all makes sense! I am at my wits end with my computer!! Even though I do not use IE much (I'm reliant on firefox), I would like to fix the issue, especially if it is a serious infection like the other person told me!!!

Nothing is jumping out of your log. Do this for me. Please download AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta from here and save it to your desktop.

Double click the file to install it. Accept the licence and follow the prompts to install and reboot. After rebooting, you should see the icon for AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta on your desktop. Double click it to open the program. You will see a window with 4 buttons at the bottom of it. Click Search For Rootkits and the program will start a scan, you will see the progress bar moving from left to right. When the scan is complete, a small window will open alerting you to the result. If anything was found, click Save Result To File and post that in your reply.

If nothing was found, please click the Perform in-depth Search saving anything found to file as before.

Hi,
Nothing was found in either scan :thumbsup:

What should I do now?? What is your opinion of system restoring my computer to a point lets say in December, before I recall any of the issues occuring? Do you think that would have any affect?
