I have been infected by the W32 virus and unable to complete running McAfee or any other virus/malware programs when I receive a blue screen of death saying that the computer has encountered a Kernel_Stack_Inpage_Error. What is that? What can I do? Help, help, help!!!

· Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
· Click the Scanning Control tab.
· Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
o Close browsers before scanning
o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others unchecked.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
· On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
· On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
· On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
· Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
· After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
· Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
· It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
· To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
o After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.

I question if your McAfee is current - is it???

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Things seem to be ok. the kernel stack thing was fixed w/ chkdsk. I had a bunch of w32/polip viruses that were cleaned by McAfee when i was running the superspyware. Seems to be a little slower starting up, but I think it's ok.

How do my logs look? And what was the adware found in the pandascan? How should I clean that?

Anything else you see?

Thanks for the help!

It was a cookie - a non-issue
Log is fine

Turn off restore points, boot, turn them back on – here’s how

OK, I've done that now.

I'd like to get rid of all the spyware programs that I no longer need. I've got ewido, superspyware, mcafee, AVG antispyware ... maybe even others.

I'd like to have just one. What should I have keep and what should I get rid of?

Thanks!

McAfee is an AntiVirus keep it

As to the Spyware - I'd keep SuperAnti and get SpyBot and Spyware Blaster

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpyBot V1.4 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Thanks again for the help. So, it's OK to have multiple spyware/adware detectors? I thought I remember once hearing only to use one. Maybe not.

So get rid of the AVG product, huh?

Also, one final question ... no more bugs are showing up, but it still seems to be slow starting up. What could be the reason for that? Seems slower than it was before I got the W32 virus and host of spyware/malware. Any thoughts about that?

Thanks so much!

You only want one AntiVirus - a reasonable number of spyware products is OK

AVG and SuperAnti is a little heavy

Hello roavatodd. MFDnSC is no longer available so on behalf of him you certainly are welcome.

Just to clarify. The reason you should not use more than one anti-virus program is due to conflicts that can arise when both are running in real-time mode simultaneously. Anti-virus software components insert themselves into the operating systems core and using more than one can cause instability, crash your computer, slow performance and waste system resources.

In contrast, using more than one anti-spyware program running in real-time mode simultaneously increases your protection coverage without causing the same kind of conflicts or affecting the stability of your system.

No single product is 100% foolproof and can detect and remove all threats at any given time. The security industry is in a constant state of change with new infections coming out on a daily basis. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes spyware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another. Thus, a layered defense using several products to supplement your anti-virus and scanning in safe mode provides the most complete protection.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
One of the reasons for slow bootup is too many apps set to run at startup. Your log shows quite a few of them which you can safely disable, especially Microsoft Office. That will speed things up a bit and improve performance. They automatically run at startup more for convenience than anything else and are available elsewhere, i.e. Start -> Programs or Control Panel.

You can fix optionally fix these entries with HijackThis. Your choice.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell QuickSet] C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~2\mimboot.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] "C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mm_tray.exe"
O4 - Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Note: After the JAVA update it will add the following entry which you can fix as well.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\jusched.exe"

However, you may want to consider using a Startup Manager instead. This will allow you to experiment and see how your system performs with any of them disabled. Startup managers you can download and use for free are Starter by CodeStuff, Autoruns and Startup Control Panel. If you decide to use a Startup Manager, then do not fix the above entries with Hijackthis.

There are reasons for slowness besides malware - i.e. disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, unnecessary services running, not enough RAM, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so regular maintenance is essential. Read "Slow Computer Checklist", "Help! My computer is slow!" and "Restore Your Computer's Performance with Windows XP".

Fixed the items you mentioned and here is a new HiJackThis log. Still a little slow starting up. I've done the following:

- Defragged - all well there
- Ran McAfee on SafeMode - no viruses
- Ran superspyware - cookie adware removed
- Deleted optional startup items
- Deleted old Java/ installed new Java (as recommended)

I'm concerned about one item in my startup. It's ctfmon.exe. I've read that it could possibly be malware. But it's in the System 32 folder. What do you think?

Thanks for the help...

Also, when I ran eventviewer, it showed I had an error on W32tm. I tried typing: w32tm/config/update at command prompt, but it was unknown. I tried to sync my time but came up with an error message.

thoughts???

thanks~!
