Thanks in advance for any help with this issue. This log comes after running Spybot and Adaware, which removed some gunk. The symptom is web browsing brings an onslaught of browser windows with trageted advertising.

Hi Tom183,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

You need to update your Java. Earlier versions have serious security vulnerabilities. Click Start, Control Panel, then double click Add/Remove Programs. When the list is populated look for any and all entries starting with J2SE or JRE with the little Java icon (a coffee cup). Remove them all, one by one. Then open your browser and go to this web page to get the latest version. Scroll dow to the middle of the page where you will find Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6. Click Download which will take you to the secure download page. At the top, select the Accept License Agreement button. Then look to the first block for the J2SE downloads for the Windows Platform. You can choose either the Online or Offline installation version; unless you have several computers you need to upgrade, I suggest the Online version.

Download the file to your desktop, and double click the icon to run the installation.

If you have trouble with the Online installation, you can download the big Offline file and install it with your browser closed.

It looks like you have some malware hiding from HijackThis. After updating Java, please navigate to

C:\util\HijackThis.exe

Right click the file icon and select rename. Type in fuzzybunny.exe and press <Enter>. Then double click the file icon to run a fresh HijackThis scan.

Post the new log to a reply here.

Dave

Hi again Tom183,

Yep, it's heftier because of all the malware that's now showing. Let's start the cleanup.

First, Unhide files and folders:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
6. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
8. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close out My Computer.
9. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
You have the program Windows Defender Real-time Protection running on your machine and that is good. But prior to doing the fix below with HiJackThis it needs to be turned off. Please do the following:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended)
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
Unless it is turned off it could interfere with the fix by HiJackThis.

Now run Vundofix:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

After the last Vundofix reboot, open HijackThis (fuzzybunny.exe) and run a scan. make sure you have no other windows open, and no programs in your taskbar.

Place a check next to the following lines. Don't worry if some are gone, just check all that you see:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {086F3ADF-92EA-4415-877E-C7DD7DD64F14} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcdebb.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {23C803E0-31C9-4169-83CD-B15F85F1FCEC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqq.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DllRunning] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyrfbcri.dll",setvm
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddcdebb - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ddcdebb.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljhffc - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljhffc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: NavLogon - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtsqq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqq.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtutttr - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vtutttr.dll
O23 - Service: Windows Host Services (WINHOST32) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system\services.exe

Click Fix Checked.

Now reboot your computer. Ordinarily I would ask you to delete some files but there's something else more urgent -- I don't see an antivirus program running on your computer!

If this is the case, you need to install an antivirus program immediately. Please download one of these free programs:

AVG Free is available at this site.

Avast Home Edition is available here.

Avira AntiVir can be downloaded here.

I personally use AVG Free, but all these programs have good reputations. If you don't like one, you can try another. Please consult the help files or online support for information on installing, updating, and using the program.

After you install and update your new antivirus, please run a full system scan and save the report. Then run a HijackThis (fuzzybunny) scan and post that log, along with your Antivirus log, to a reply here.

Good luck,

Dave
