Sorry - HiJackThis is runing from a temp directory and must be moved to run correctly

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index....=tpmod;dl=item5
Scroll down to the download section

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HiJackThis – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

O4 - Global Startup: svchost.exe

DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip or
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\svchost.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
Empty the recycle bin
Boot

Download Superantispyware

http://www.superantispyware.com/superantis...efreevspro.html

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
· It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
· Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
· Click the Scanning Control tab.
· Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
o Close browsers before scanning
o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others unchecked.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
· On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
· On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
· On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
· Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
· After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
· Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
· It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
· To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
o After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
o Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
· Click close and close again to exit the program.
· Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log.

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Hi Cutie117,

I have been asked to take over your log.

Your Panda scan shows bad news.

I am sorry to tell you that there is a bot worm on your computer.

A bot worm is a program that is installed without your knowledge and enables a hacker, sitting at another computer perhaps thousands of miles away, to control your computer so that it does what he wants -- it becomes his "bot."

Bots can be used to launch denial-of-service attacks (This is where hundreds of bots simultaneously bombard a website with requests for information, overwhelming its capacity to respond and, thereby, shutting it down) and for other sorts of mischief. The bot can also do mass spam mailing, download files to the computer, or upload files and data, including passwords and other private information. As a worm, it can also use its mass mailing ability to replicate itself on other users' machines.

Judging by your description of how your computer is behaving, it appears that this worm is active and in fact is making use of many if not all its capabilities.

For these reasons it is very important that, starting immediately, this machine be kept off the internet and physically disconnected from any network it may be part of.

If you use or have used this computer for online banking or shopping or for accessing or storing personal information such as school records, then you need to take steps to protect your information that may have been compromised. I recommend these steps for action:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

The very first step is to go to a clean computer and change any and all online passwords -- banking, credit cards, schools, employers, e-mail, all of them. Then follow up with the other steps in the "Possible Identity Theft" article. Do this now.

This is something i don't like to recommend normally, but with a computer this badly infected, the best solution for your safety, and for the safety of others, would be to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

Please read the following link very carefully:

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Here are some more links to help you decide:

Security Management - May 2004
Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community...gmt/sm0504.mspx

Security Management - July 2004
Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do? Part II
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community...gmt/sm0704.mspx

Only you can make this decision. But please consider carefully before deciding against a reformat. If you do make that decision I will do my best to help you disinfect it, but you must understand that once a machine has been taken over by this type of malware, it can never be declared clean.

If you choose to format and reinstall see this link for instructions:
http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/how-tos/reinstall-faq.html

Please let me know whatever decision you make. I will be glad to advise you on exactly how to do the reformat and reinstall. If that is your decision, please include the make and model number of your computer so that I can research it. The procedure is different depending on what sort of recovery disks you have available.

Hi again,

That is really, sucks!!!

I agree. The people who write this malware are criminals, and you are the victim of a crime. You ought to be angry. I am glad you don't have any important financial information on this computer, but please take the other steps I recommended, including changing passwords and keeping the notebook off line. Think of the other people who may be getting copies of this worm from you.

But I really want to format mt note.

Do you mean "I really want to format my notebook" or "I really do not want to format my notebook"?

Even if I formai it , is there the possibility It still beeing infected?

No. The power of the reformat is that it wipes out all traces of the infection, including those that are not identified by virus scanners.

I dont have any discs here. Do I need them?

I have just been to the Hewlett-Packard Support site and it appears that you should have been given an Operating System CD when you bought the computer. You should also have been given a Software disk which would contain all your other software. If you do not have those CDs with you, then in order to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows you will need to get them, or order a new set from Hewlett Packard.

can i save some of my files or not?

If you have a blank CD-R disk and your CD Writer disk and software are functioning, then it should be possible to save all your data files to CD and copy them back onto your hard drive after you reinstall Windows. A USB microstorage device ("thumb drive") would also work.

If you have a friend who is well versed in computer repair, he or she could temporarily remove your hard drive and install it as a "Slave drive" in a desktop computer. That would make it easy not only to save your data but also to scan your hard drive with several malware scanning programs. That is actually the best way to scan an infected drive, because the malware is not running and therefore cannot defend itself.

This is probably not possible for you I realize, but if by any chance it is, this is a very good option and would give you the best chance of a successful cleaning without doing a reformat/reinstall.

Note: I am not suggesting networking the computer to another machine. Too much chance of spreading the infection that way because your machine would have to be running.

Please let me know what is possible for you. If you need the machine back in service quickly, then without the disks, we may have to attempt a cleanup.

Dave

Hi again,

No problem with the language, we seem to be able to understand each other well enough most of the time.

You can save your data files to CD as I said. If you need help with this I will do what I can and there are other people here at Bleeping Computer who can help as well. Have you ever done any backups at all? Your HP computer should have a CD/DVD burning program installed, probably Roxio or Nero. Both of those programs have very good help features to guide you through common tasks. What you will need to do is burn a Data CD. It's a fairly simple process, just a matter of adding files and folders to a list. The interface is very much like Windows Explorer. Once you have listed all the files and folders you want to save, you load in a blank CD-R, then press a few buttons and the CD is burned for you.

To answer your question: You can download the driver files off the internet no problem. These are relatively small pieces of software. However your Program files (including Windows XP) are hundreds of megabytes and are not downloadable. The only way to get them from Hewlett Packard is to order replacement disks.

The easiest and lowest cost option would be to wait until you get back to Ohio and can use the disks you already have. You have to decide whether it is worth the trouble and expense to have your disks shipped to you in Rio. That depends on your needs.
