Our computer has multiple symptoms like:
1. Display resolution has been set and stuck on the lowest setting possible.
2. On startup, normal programs begin to launch but get shut down.
3. A small popup search bar is anchored at the lower right corner of the screen.
4. Internet disabled, but e-mail functioning.
5. Only process running is "desktopsearch"

We've tried the following:
1. Removed obvious programs in Add/Remove programs (probably deleted too many!)
2. Run Disk cleanup
3. Ad-Aware
4. Spybot
5. AVG

AVG continues to remove the same downloader trojans like:
1. Qoologic.*
2. lzgqcc.dll
3. impahh.exe
etc...

MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ADVICE ON HOW TO MANUALLY REMOVE THESE AND GET OUR SYSTEM BACK UP AND RUNNING.

The following log was run immediately upon reboot to safe mode after running the above mentioned programs.

Please download and run the VX2 addon for Adaware. Follow the instructions on this page.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Thank You Very Much for your help. Looks like we're making some progress!

I did the following:
1. Made hidden files visible
2. VX2 is "Status System Clean"
3. Ran HijackThis to fix 23 items
4. Rebotted into Safe Mode
5. Searched the c: drive for kpgihh.exe, not found.
6. Searched the c: drive for lnkdmod.exe, found and deleted.
7. Found and deleted the following:

bsqvrc.exe (many other variants I didn't delete; ie. bsqvra thru bsqvrf)
ntqnec.exe
desktop.exe
ffisearch.exe
secure.exe
voygww.exe

8. Did not find the rest of the files listed.

When I rebotted into normal mode:
1. The internet now works.
2. The anchored search window is gone.
3. The Video Resolution settings are still stuck on 800x600 and 4 bit color.
4. My HomeSeer program still gets shut down when it tries to begin on startup.

I ran the new HijackThis log below:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [L0onRWd3P] lmf42u.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\lmf42u.exe

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.

Please run these two online scans. Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm

If there are files that can not be removed by the scans please include that information in your next post.

Please post a new hijackthis log.

I did all of the recommended fixes. No noticable improvement.

Housecall found a trojan called "IESER.A" but it was in the Hijack Backup directory and couldn't be cleaned. However, I assume the backups for Hijack include files it has quarantined.

Pandasoft fixed three files but my resolution is so bad..... I couldn't read if there was anything else that it might have said.

Still have same problems as last post.

THANKS!!! Here's the new log.

Your log is clean.

It sounds like your screen resolution issue is due to a bad driver or your video card may be going bad. Try reinstalling the driver.

I don't even know what Home Seer is, but I would try reinstalling it to see if that fixes the problem.

To prevent from getting infected again please consider installing Spyware Blaster. SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Please visit Windows Update and install all critical updates found for your computer.

Buckeye_Sam,

You are correct on every account!

For some reason, I had to do the following fixes as a result of the spyware attack.

1. Download and re-install the Nvidia video card drivers.
2. Download and re-install the Microsoft MDAC support for XML. I had a program that kept killing itself because the XML support was corrupt.

It looks like I'm running well.

I'll download and run Spyware Blaster.

You folks are AWESOME. Many thanks!
