Posted 17 January 2007 - 04:59 PM

I'm running an Advent laptop PC with Norton Internet Security 2007 on it. All bought in Oct 2005. Never had any problems until this morning when I logged on and was immediately informed that I had a Trojan backdoor virus. I got this warning via a System Alert (a yellow triangle thing in the bottom right corner with an exclamation mark in it). It asked me to click on the balloon and it took me to an advert for MalawareWiped and invited me to purchase it for $49.95.

I immediatley ran a system scan with Norton, Nothing was detected.
The whole time this icon is telling me that I have a virus.
Then another Windows icon popped up telling me I had the Win 32 virus.
Evenutally I went on line to Symantec for their help. They told lme to run another full system scan. I did. It showed nothing.

I then began to wonder why this System Alert kept inviting me to purchase the MalawareWiped software. I Googled MalawareWiped and was informed it was a Trojan virus and was linked to Pest Capture and Vermis or something, all of which I'd been invited to buy. I also noticed a "new" part of my browser which wasn't there yesterday, entitled Security Protection or something.

Surfing the web brought me to My Bleeping Computer.com and I have followed your instructions for getting rid of Malaware faithfully with the following problems.

I could not download HouseCall Anti Virus. I got halfway through the scan and inadvertently switched off the browser button and had to start again (sorry for being an idiot). When I rebooted and tried to do it again it said " Several Java virtual machines running in the same process caused the error". In the end I gave up.

The McAfee Stinger showed nothing.

The Ad-Aware SE showed a number of corrupt files including Win32.TrojanDownloader.Zlob. I pressed Delete and I think its deleted them. A further scan showed another 2 tracking cookie things graded as TAC 3. I have deleted them in fear!

Spybot has deleted files it believes are bad and tells me the Microsoft Security Centre is disabled. I think I've turned it back on.

I have run 2 x Norton Security Full Scans. 3 x Ad Aware SE scans and 2 x Spy Bot scans plus McAfee and Hijack scan.
The annoying Security Alert has gone as has the "security bar" from the browser.

Below is the read out from Hijack This,

Have I got rid of the virus? Am I safe to buy things on the net and open my accounts?
How come Norton Internet Security failed to find any of the files that Ad Aware and Spybot deem as Critical?

Thanks for your time and help. I hope I've done okay at this - I've been at it since 10.30 this mornign and its now 10pm! I look forward to your response.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new hijack log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Hi MFDnSC -

This morning I paid particular attention to the way my machine starts prior to following your instructions above. the screen shows ADVENT first, then it goes to Norton Go Back screen and quickly following that is the Windows icon. At no time does it bleep during start up, so I haven't put into effect your instructions above since I'm too worried to do that without the "bleep" prompt, in case I do it at the wrong time and ruin everything. The instructions for the PC tell me that during Start Up the computer goes through some sequence or other (Power On Self Test) during which I must not terminate operation otherwise that's it.

This morning I have run another Ad Aware scan and Spy Bot scan and nothing has come up. I intend to alter the Internet Settings as per instructions from Grinler about making my computer more secure. Should I download and scan my system with Superantispyware as per your instructions above? I wait to hear from you. I feel that the Norton Internet Security protection that I bought (£89) is obviously not protecting the PC as I thought it would, and I will certainly be using Ad Aware Spybot etc regularly now.

Hope to hear from you later and thanks again for your time and help

Da ndo

Here's another question: when I run Spy Bot it completes the scan and tells me I have (this morning) 129 infections, then I am bombarded with little windows from Spy Bot Doctor telling me a Registry change has taken place and it lists a great long number. I have to click on the X in the top right hand corner to get rid of this box. But they keep coming. How do I avoid this and what is it trying to tell me? I noted this morning that one of the "infections" was Trojan. Man, this could wear you out!

turn off TeaTimer in SpyBot -

MODE - ADVANCED - TOOLS - RESIDENT - UnCheck both boxes

You can enable it when we are done

Hi again

Okay, below is the latest result from the Hijack This scan and beneath that are the results from Smitfraud fix and Super Anti spyware..

The Super Anti Spyware tells me that there are 101 threats, 11 of them are Trojan Media Codec.

During the Smitfraudfix scan I was not asked to replace any infected files. My desktop background seems to be okay.

SpyBot keeps telling me that "Microsoft WindowsSecurity Centre - Disabled" despite me having it turned on.

SpyBot tells me that "SpyBot Search and Destroy has detected an important registry entry that has been changed.

System Start up User Entry
Value Added - Registry change denied"

The above came up after loading Super Antispy - in one of the annoying SpBot boxes that I thought I'd turned off in Tea Timer.

I have the following now on this laptop. Do I need them all?
SpyBot
Smit Fraudfix
Spyware Blaster
Stinger v 302
Super Anti Spyware
Ad-Aware SE Personal

Thanks again for your help. I really do appreciate it and I'm sorry to appear so dim and ask so many questions.

Hi again (God you must be getting fed up with me)

Right I've done what you suggested and eliminated that file 021 SSODL etc via Hijack scan. I have also blocked the 3rd party cookies on the internet. With regard to disabling and enabling the Windows ME system restore, I couldn't find a Performance Tab on System but did find one called System Restore which seemed to have the same thing under it - namely Turn off (or Turn on whichever) System REstore, so I checked that, rebooted, unchecked it, rebooted and here we are.

Does this mean the virus is now gone? Am I safe to access my bank details etc on line?

Thanks again for your help
Dando  :flowers:
