Is Solaris like Windows XP as far as the layout or is it like Linux?

Solaris is an official Unix proper, so it will share some similarities with Linux.
It's more a server-oriented OS, so the driver support isn't quite as wide as Linux, but definitely worth looking into if you want to broaden your experience in *nix.

Yes, it'll run on a laptop. x86/x64 architectures are supported.
In fact it looks like they have a laptop compatibility chart.
