Hello rachy and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see a few things which we can clean up so let's do that. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download LSP-Fix to your desktop. Do not run it yet.

Download ATF Cleaner. Do not run this yet either. We will shortly.

Step #2

I would recommend removing PalTalk Messenger since it is adware supported. The choice is up to you. To remove it:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
PalTalk (or anything with PalTalk in the name)
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...arch.yahoo.com/
O2 - BHO: IEHelperObj Class - {6754A456-BAD9-11D4-93D3-00B0D03A2F91} - C:\PROGRA~1\Odigo\Bin\OdigoBHO.dll (file missing)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/...GB_ZNxdm801YYUS
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: Y!mLite - {9B04D939-D9D1-45e0-9FBF-5A31AAF7A68A} - C:\Program Files\Y!mLite\ymlite.exe (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {85D1F3B2-2A21-11D7-97B9-0010DC2A6243} (SecureLogin class) - http://secure2.comned.com/signuptemplates/...login-devel.cab
O16 - DPF: {B64F4A7C-97C9-11DA-8BDE-F66BAD1E3F3A} - http://locator1.cdn.imagesrvr.com/sites/er...easeInstall.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step #5

Double-click on LspFix.exe on your desktop to start the program and then click the Finish button.

Step #6

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Cheers.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Hi rachy. Everything looks fine in the log. How are things running?

The PixAlert program is a content management program that monitors graphics that get displayed on the screen for inappropriate content. Those type of programs usually do not allow other processes to end them (even Windows). That is probably the message that you are seeing when Windows attempts to shut the program down when the computer is shutting off.

I see that the 010 entry for lsp32.dll is still in the log also but since it is part of PCEye (a parental control program) and PCEye is running that should not be a problem either. PCEye is probably protecting the file from being accessed except by itself.

Cheers.

Hi rachy. There was nothing in the log that shows any of those things. Here's a couple of things you can try:

Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping the OS updated the computer is vulnerable to every infection on the net and in emails today and trying to repair an unpatched system is virtually impossible. For update purposes, Microsoft has even stopped supporting a system that is this far out of date. Go to the Windows Update site and install Service Pack 2. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates. This will patch the system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which are present on this system. If you are not on a broadband connection the Service Pack can be obtained from Microsoft for a nominal shipping fee.

Download AVG anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need to run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen, under "How to act" select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • IMake sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • At the bottom of the window click on the "Apply all actions" button
Note: Don't save the report before you hit the Apply action button.
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan back here so I can take a look at it.
Cheers.

Hi rachy. Yes, that's a problem with IE7 and the BTBroadband help application. You can either uninstall the BTBroadband help application or go to the BTBroadband folder (look for a folder in C:\Program Files\ that has BTBroadband in the name) and then locate any files named psapi.dll and rename them to psapi.old. This will force the BTBroadband application to use the psapi.dll file in the c:\windows\system32 folder which is the correct version for IE7.

Cheers.

Hi rachy. Let's see what BTBroadband programs are installed.

Start HijackThis and click on the Misc Tools button.

Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Now click the Save List... button.

Save the file and Notepad will open with the information in it. Post that information back here and we'll find which one you need to uninstall.

As for a firewall, yes, it is important to have one. Here are a couple of free ones that are very good:Cheers.

Hi rachy. I think the program causing the problem with IE7 is the BT Broadband Desktop Help. To uninstall it do the following:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
BT Broadband Desktop Help
After removing if it doesn't ask you to reboot do so anyway and then try IE7. Let me know if the error message is gone.

Cheers.

Hi rachy. The log looks fine. No signs of any problems.

If the problem is mainly with the internet connection then I would suggest posting in the Web Browser forum here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/14/web-browsingemail-and-other-internet-applications/ . They can assist in diagnosing issues involving internet connection issues.

If the problem is more general and relates to the overall computer operation then I would suggest posting in the XP forum here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/56/windows-xp-home-and-professional/ . They can assist with diagnosing overall performance issues and recommend any adjustments that might need to be made.

Cheers.
