Hello. looking for some help and advise. I posted a message in the "am I infected" section and someone told me to do a bitdefender scan which I did. It showed some virus were deleted but said some still existed. I posted what it said and the person helping me said I should post a HJT log here for you all to look over. Please advise

Hi,

The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread.
Then I'll take a look.

Also,
I notice from your log that you are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled. Symantec and Avira
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!
If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed,
you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

Hi Bill L,

This is a bit confusing here now...
I actually replied to very first log you posted, the one from your Windows XP System.
Now I see you posted a log from a Windows 98 System.

I don't see anything suspicious in the second log, so not sure what the problem is.

The instruction I gave to remove the extra antivirus was for your XP System.

I was confused to as to why you posted to the first one. I posted that one last week but my system completely crashed. The 2nd log is from an old computer Im using now with Windows 95. I still get the "blue" screen often and I get IE errors whenever I try to get onto certain web pages. Just not running right and thats why I ran the scans and posted the log. Was hoping you saw something in it that could help.

Hi,

So the first XP log is not needed to analyze anymore?

You say you are running Windows 95, but as far I can see it's Windows 98 in your log.

Platform: Windows 98 SE (Win9x 4.10.2222A)

What errors do you exactly get? Because I can't see anything strange in your log.
If I know the exact error, then I know where to search since there are so many different errors.
Also, I see you are still having Internet Explorer 5... Keep in mind that many software need at least Internet Explorer 6.

When I go onto various web sites I get an error saying "The program has performed an illegal operation and will now shut down." It happens EVERY time I try and enter Yahoo games. I downloaded Mozilla and tried to get into Yahoo that way however it says I need to install Java. But when I click on it the download starts but tells me it failed with error code 203.

Hi,

Yahoo games and Firefox is indeed an issue on 98*Grinler systems.
Also take a look here:
http://www.castlecops.com/p774296-firefox_...ahoo_games.html

But first.. you really have to get rid of the extra scanners first, because they are not compatible.
I still see AVG AND Bitdefender present, so you have to uninstall Bitdefender or uninstall AVG. You can't have both.

Looks like the main problem with your Internet Explorer and Yahoo games is that it crashes on the Applet.
So not sure if you have installed latest Sun Java. But if you didn't..

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
But as I already said, you are still running the previous version of Internet Explorer. You should update to Internet Explorer 6, because you may indeed get a lot of errors nowadays under this version and it wouldn't suprise me either that it's because you are still using this older version.
Not sure either of latest java supports old IE version 5. That's why you should update to IE6 anyway.

As a sidenote..
Effective July 11, 2006, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me has transitioned to a non-supported status. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide any incident support options or security updates. Existing support documents, however, will continue to be available through the Microsoft
Support Product Solution Center Web site.
