Can someone help me with this computer of mine. When I have automatic updates turned on it continually restarts after 5 minutes or so. So I have to disable it.
And when I try to update manually it crashes. So does it when I tried to upgrade to Windows Media 11 and Explorer 7.
I just can't update .
Am I missing a file.
I cannot put in my CD as it has a crack in it.

I'd suggest trying this free tool to reregister the Windows Update dll's: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#Standard_version

If that fails, then I'd suggest this free tool (I haven't used it myself):

Try validating your copy of Windows using The Genuine Windows Advantage Software.

BTW,I just did this and altho I don't use IE7, I am able to use WMP 11.
Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

Thank you both but I am still having trouble.
I have done all that you have given me but after downloading the updates it crashes and restarts when installing. At first it installed the downloads for Messanger but crashed and restarted on one of the installations for Windows XP updates. I tried again after using one of the other programs that you sent me and it done it all again.
I validated the windows software as well and that was all OK.

Do you have anymore suggestions.
Thanks

Try running SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from the Run dialog. Mini guide here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/43051/how-to-use-sfcexe-to-repair-system-files/

If that doesn't work, try a repair install of XP (it'll leave your programs and data intact): http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
