Hi typhoone and welcome to the Bleeping Computer forums. My name is Whisperer and I will be helping you with your problem. Although I am experienced with computers, I am currently a Trainee in Malware removal and, as such, ALL of my fixes will be checked by malware experts. I am sorry for the delay in answering you but things are pretty hectic in the anti-malware world.

If you have not done so already, please do the initial cleanup steps in the following instructions: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting a HijackThis Log

To assist me in any cleanup, I would like you to produce a list of installed programs.
  • To do this open your HijackThis
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section or Config… button, depending on how you are set up.
    • If you used the Config... option then click the Misc Tools tab
    • Select Open Uninstall Manager , a list of your installed programs will be displayed.
    • Select the Save List… button and save the file to your desktop.
  • Please post a copy of this list and an up-to-date HijackThis log in your reply
GT

Thanks for the information, I will now be looking at the log in greater detail and will then check with the experts before getting back to you with any fixes.

Hang in there

Hi Typhoone,

I am waiting for the stamp of approval for my proposal, but I will ask 3 questions now to speed things slightly.

Q1. When did you install SpeedStartUp?
Q2. What problem caused you to install µnBlackList?
Neither of these programs fall into my desirable list and neither show in your Uninstall list.
Q3. Please confirm that ‘averatec’ is your desired Internet Service Provider?

Hope to be back with you today

GT

speedstartup was originally installed around 2 months ago simply because my computer was taking around 2 minutes to startup, and at that time that was considered a long time.

unblacklist must have been something that a buddy put on when he put a piece of software on a while back, because otherwise i don't know, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings to get rid of either one of them.

averatec isn't my isp, it is the brand of computer i have. My isp is road-runner (time warner cable)

thanks again for your assistance

-hank

Hi typhoone,

The good (and bad) news is that there does not appear to be any nasty things showing in your log. However I must bring to your attention the p2p software that you are using. In the early days of p2p, a good one that was clear of malware presented no problems; nowadays the hackers are exploiting the files that are downloaded for their own use – end of lecture :flowers:

We will start with a clean and speed up of your computer, update your Java, remove a couple of things within HJT and then have a look for any other reasons for your slow-down.

  • Download CCleaner
    • Select the Download Latest Version link (top of green column) and save to your desktop
    • Right-click the ccsetup127.exe file on your desktop and select Open
    • Follow the on-screen instructions through to the Install Options page. I suggest you only retain the following 2 options
      • Add Desktop Shortcut
      • Automatically check for updates etc…
    • Click Install
      To setup CCleaner
    • Click on the CCleaner icon on your desktop.
    • From the menu on the left select Options
    • Now select Advanced. On the right remove the check against Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
    • Select Cookies. When CCleaner is run it will remove all of the cookies in the left window; if there are cookies that you wish to retain then select them and transfer them to the right window. Multiple selections can be made by holding down the Ctrl key before selecting.
    • Select Cleaner from the left menu and the Windows tab
      • Under Internet Explorer place ticks in all but the last box
      • Under Windows Explorer tick the last two only
      • Under System tick all boxes
      • There is no need to tick anything under Advanced
    • From the menu on the left click on Analyze
    • When the analysis is complete, click on Run Cleaner and OK at the next screen.
    • Close CCleaner
  • To defragment your disk(s), click the Start button and select All Programs
    • Select Accessories
    • Select System Tools and Disk Defragmenter
    • Select the disk to be defragmented and click Analyze, follow the advice received
    • NOTE: If this is the first time that you have defragmented your disk(s) it could take a long time
  • Your Java installation is out of date as the current release is Version 6.
    • Use Internet Explorer and go to this link to update your Java.
    • Scroll down and click the Download button adjacent to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
    • In the new window under Requiredclick to accept the licence agreement, the window will refresh
    • Select the first option, the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-languagelink and follow the instructions
    • Finally use Add or Remove programs to remove all earlier versions of Java
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • We will now clean up the elements of the log. The first two are definites and the following 4 are resource hogs and as such are advisory. Start your HijackThis and click on Scan
    • Click in the check-box to the left of each of the following entries, if found
      • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
      • O16 - DPF: {85D1F3B2-2A21-11D7-97B9-0010DC2A6243} (SecureLogin class) - http://secure2.comned.com/signuptemplates/...login-devel.cab
These next 4 are advisory, checking these does not remove the programs, just prevents it starting with Windows
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PRONoMgr.exe] "C:\Program Files\Intel\PROSetWireless\NCS\PROSet\PRONoMgr.exe"
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZCfgSvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZCfgSvc.exe
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    • With all windows closed except HijackThis, select Fix Checked
  • Now we will dig a little further into what might be running quietly in the background. Download Silentrunners.zip from here and save it to your Desktop.
    • First you will need to extract the file(s).
      • Right click on the zipped folder and from the new menu click on Extract All
      • In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next
      • Click on Next again.
      • In the final window, click on Finish
      • You should now see the contents of the Silent Runners folder - Silent Runnners.vbs.
    • Double click Silent Runners.vbs to run it.
      IMPORTANT
Some real-time protection programs may warn you of a possibly malicious script being detected when you run Silent Runnners.vbs, allow it to run. Alternatively, disable any script blocking software you have running before you start.
    • You will receive a prompt: Do you want to skip supplementary searches? - click NO
    • Once the All Done! prompt flashes up, open the Startup Program text file that has appeared in the folder and copy & paste it into your next reply.
  • Please reboot the computer and then post
    • A fresh HijackThis log
    • The SilentRunners text file.
    • Do let me know how the computer is behaving now.

The computer is still taking FOREVER to start up, but when i finally get started it is okay i guess. Also, i don't know if this has any direct relation to my computer slowing down, but for a while now when i am shutting down my computer i get an " End Task - Sample " Like i said, i don't know if that has anything to do with this, but i figure it couldn't hurt to tell you.

Thank you for all of your help.

Hi typhoone,

Your SilentRunners log shows nothing untoward, other than the fact that you are still running an out-of-date Java which is confirmed by your HijackThis log. An out-of-date Java installation is vulnerable to attack as is old versions retained on your computer so please update this facility as shown earlier.

Open HijackThis and go to the Misc tools section. Under StartupList (integrated v1.52) place a tick in List also minor sections (full) and then click the Generate StartupList log button.

Please post this log in your next reply together with an up-to-date HijackThis log
GT

Hang on in there Hank,

Working through the options BUT I notice that you have the Windows Firewall active as well as ZoneAlarm. Please stop the Windows Firewall immediately as 2 software firewalls often clash with each other

Please advise what you know about the 'serials generator' program that you have installed.

Back later

GT

i don't have any firewalls active here lately. i have always just used my zone alarm as my antivirus/firewall, but after my computer started SLOWing down, i deactivated zone alarm from the start up because it was literally taking 15 minutes just for me to be able to do anything from the time I pressed the power button to turn on my computer

That program is called serial generations, and a while back i had to reformat my hard drive but i had bought nero i want to say 2 month prior. well, i couldn't find my serial code to it, so i downloaded that because it has A LOT of serials in it, and it had the one i needed. But that has been easily 6 months ago, so i seriously doubt that that is the problem.

Hi Hank,

You do not have any sign of Malware on your computer that could be causing your problem, but you do have a number of Anti Malware applications running that could be the cause. As a general rule you must have one software Firewall and one AntiVirus solution with probably a maximum of 2 active AntiSpyware so I am going to recommend that you stop/remove a lot of the surplus elements that you have installed. I would suggest that you retain the ZoneLabs security suite to satisfy both the Antivirus and Firewall requirements as well as one of the AntiVirus solutions. For the other antivirus I suggest you retain SpySweeper even though it is a bit of a resource hog in its own right. That is also the setup that I use.

The sole aim of this ‘fix’ is to get you up and running again in a safe environment and any removals are of course totally advisory as none of it is Malware, as a reminder, the O4 entries will only prevent the program from starting so please act on all of them, including the qttask.exe :flowers:
  • First and foremost, restart ZoneAlarm to re-establish your Firewall and AntiVirus requirements before you really get infected with Malware. Before reconnecting to the Internet ensure that the Windows Firewall is off.
  • Next, please start your HijackThis and click on Scan
    • Click in the check-box to the left of the following entry if found
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RestoreIT!] "C:\Program Files\Phoenix Technologies\cME\RPro\ XP\VBPTASK.EXE" VBStart

      • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AnyDVD] C:\Program Files\SlySoft\AnyDVD\AnyDVD.exe
    • With all windows closed except HijackThis, selectFix Checked
  • Now click the Startbutton and select Run and type in services.msc . Every one of the entries listed below is running unnecessarily at Windows Startup and contribute to your slow computer
    • Locate each one in turn and right-click the entry.
    • From the drop-down select Properties
    • In the new dialogue box do 2 actions
      • Change the Startup type to Manual
      • Click the Stop button
    • These are the ones to change, if any are not there then make a note and advise me in the next postAVG Anti-Spyware Guard
