Peer to peer services like the gnutella network [limewire, bearshare, etc], eDonkey, and bittorrent aren't illegal in and of themselves. Bittorrent for example is often used to distribute legal downloads such as computer game demos or Linux ISOs. But these methods are also the common protocols to acquire copyrighted material, which is what is illegal.
Although gnutella is quite rife with viruses and trojan bots, so usually people who use Limewire pick up malware infections like no other.
