Posted 10 January 2007 - 09:26 PM

The problem came about after a bad download... the only new installs lately are 1click DVD copy (now removed) and DVD43.

I get regular warnings from AVG about a detected threat as named in the title (I move them to the vault). I also get warnings from zonealarm about update.exe and ip configuration utility trying to access the internet ( I always deny acess)

I've run spybot (get a continuous Smitfraud detection) and adaware, as well as a full scan with AVG, panda active scan, dit deffender, counter spy, all in safe mode after running CCleaner, with no luck. A few things get detected but the problem returns on reboot. I'm running win xpo with sp2. My hijack this log file follows....

Any help would be appreciated,
Mike

Multiple things to do - do them all and then post the logs requested - it may take multiple posts, but post only the last hijack log after doing everything

Please download http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4 to C:\
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.
=================

1. Download this file :

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/combofix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJack log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
========================

Download Superantispyware

http://www.superantispyware.com/superantis...efreevspro.html

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
· It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
· Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
· Click the Scanning Control tab.
· Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
o Close browsers before scanning
o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others unchecked.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
· On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
· On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
· On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
· Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
· After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
· Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
· It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
· To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
o After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
o Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
· Click close and close again to exit the program.
· Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log.

By the way I decided to do the rest in safe mode bacause of all the threat detections I was getting. If you don't want this let me know.

Also I'm having another problem with a randomly dropped internet connection. Just letting you know in case it helps, maybe that will resolve itself once I've fixed this...

Thanks again

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HiJackThis – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

==================
Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find this exact name

COM+ Messages

Rightclick and choose "Properties". Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Click Apply then OK. File-Exit the Services utility.

==================
DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip or
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\Program Files\Outerinfo
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yyadd.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\?icrosoft.NET

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new hijack log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Results... (HJT log file at the end....)

- COM+ Messages was already disabled and not running

- Killbox deleted all but this entry
C:\WINDOWS\system32\?icrosoft.NET

- Everything else seemed to go fine.

One other note, counter spy alerted me with the following...
A new Shell Execute Hook for Windows Explorer has been detected. A Shell Execute Hook program is embedded in your Window's Explorer and can control how programs are launched.

Name: {5AE067D3-9AFB-48E0-853A-EBB7F4A000DA}

I blocked the action.

That value is associated with SuperAntiSPy

How are things?

Again, I'm at work right now but I'll do as you say when I get off (~6hrs).

Things seemed fine though, no more threats detected, no more warnings from zone alarm. That last file that couldn't be found, i.e. C:\WINDOWS\system32\?icrosoft.NET
Should I be worried about that?

Ok... turned off system restore, booted and turned it back on.

I noticed one warning from ZoneAlarm that SoftwareUpdate.exe was trying to access the internet. Not sure if that's a windows app or not. Other than that, no AVG warnings or other zonealarm warnings.

Do you have Itunes as it appears that's what that is - if not file the file and see what it is associated with

Yeah, I use itunes. First time I've seen this process alert in zone alarm though.

What do you mean by "file the file"?
