Have you done a scan for viruses or malware? Something may have slipped past your current protection so a double check is usually a good idea. Here's a link to a free, online scanner: http://safety.live.com/

Under a theory that Windows Explorer is shot, try this:
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete
Task Manager should come up -- it it does not, stop, otherwise
On the menu, find File > NewTask
enter explorer.exe

Do you have a Windows key on your keyboard? It has the little flying windows symbol on it. On the keyboard I'm using at the moment it is between the CTRL and ALT keys. It may be in a different location on your keyboard but normally it is in the lower left hand corner somewhere. If you press it at least you should get your start menu to appear.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who haven't got it.

If you don't have the actual Windows key itself, the key combination "Ctrl" + "Esc" may work for you.

The Fn key is usually on laptops, but the Alt key is on most every keyboard.
