Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum.
My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today.

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

Please move HijackThis to another location, preferably c:\Program Files\HijackThis. Anywhere is fine, other than your Desktop or a Temp folder. If HijackThis is in a temporary folder you run the risk of accidentally deleting the backups or it clutters your desktop with all the backups.
If you use Windows XP it might be that you just double clicked on the file HijackThis.exe, but that only extracts the file to a temporary folder. Please select the file and Extract it to a folder.

How do you make a permanent folder:

Click "My Computer", then "C:\" and then on "Program Files".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have "C:\Program Files\HijackThis". Put your HijackThis.exe there.

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right) Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'. In the field, copy and paste the filepath a few lines below.
Click open. Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now.
When asked if you want to reboot now, say Yes.:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe

After the reboot, start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Download and save Blacklight to your desktop.
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
Click on scan then click next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Do not choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first; legitimate items can also be present.
There is a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

David

Hello there,

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

Please keep TeaTimer disabled for the time being.

This "ntos.exe" file is a really nasty file to try to remove, so we are going to have to really force it. Even in safe mode the file is locked, so it won't be delete even on a reboot. We are going to run the Avenger, which is dangerous, so it's important to follow the instructions exactly.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Please open notepad and and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\cfcnipuj]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\ClrSchLoader]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\gvmv]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Internet Optimizer]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\msbb]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\VVSN]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Win Server Updt]

Save this as "fix.reg" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Close Hijackthis, reopen it, and run a scan and save the log.
Please post that log along with the avenger.txt.

Hi David,

Again, thank you very much for your time! I really appreciate your help. After completing all of the steps that I did print out and follow carefully, I found after the first Hijack This scan that indeed the F2 - REG:system.ini.UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS0system32\ntos.exe, was still ppresent. Therefore, I did fix/delete it, close HJT, then restarted and did a second scan, which you will see the log of the second scan below, following the avenger log.

Thanks again!!! Andrea

David,

Ok, I ran the Kaspersky and I did not have an option to save the log - it took over 3 hours to run, and whenit was finished, there was no option to "save Log" so I hope I don't have to do it again! I will, of course if necessary. Anyhow, I just went File > Save As > text. Here is the result (basically everything on the page in text...) AND PLEASE NOTE: Down in the bottom left hand of the IE scan result the page I am seeing an "error on page" message with the yellow sign and explanation point. I will probably have to run the scan again! Yikes!!! So here is the saved text version - (and below it I have posted the new HJT log):
David, you are so kind to be so helpful. Thank you - ANDREA

Kaspersky Log:

Kaspersky Online ScannerWelcome to the Kaspersky Online Scanner! Use it to
scan your PC for viruses and other malware for free
Warning: if you have installed Kaspersky Online Scanner BETA, please
manually uninstall it using "Add/Remove Programs" before installing this
version! Otherwise this version will not function correctly.

Benefits:

Kaspersky Anti-Virus exceptional detection rates and thorough scanning
Hourly AV database updates available each time the Online Scanner is
launched
Heuristic analysis to detect unknown viruses
Simple installation (just click on a link)

Requirements and limitations:

When using this service for the first time, you have to run with
Administrator privileges in order to install the product. Also, you will
need to download and install files about 400 KB in size (about 1 minute on
a 57.6 kbps connection) followed by 7 MB of virus definitions.
However, if you use the Online Scanner again, you will only need to
download the files that have been updated since your last scan.
The Online Scanner service offered by Kaspersky Lab uses Microsoft ActiveX
technology. Microsoft ActiveX Technology and the Kaspersky Online Scanner
work only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher.
We cannot guarantee that the Online Scanner will function correctly if you
are using any other browser or any Internet Explorer extensions (such as
AvantBrowser). If you use a different browser, you can use the Kaspersky
File Scanner to scan individual files.
The free Kaspersky Online Scanner does not scan RAM, boot sectors and
MBRs, so it cannot detect malicious code located in these areas.
Please note: The free Kaspersky Online Scanner does not protect against
malicious code, and cannot prevent future infections. It only detects
malware that has already penetrated your computer. We strongly recommend
that you install a full antivirus solution to protect your system.

Privacy statement:

The Kaspersky Online Scanner will collect information about the malicious
programs found on your computer during the scanning process. The
information will be sent to the Kaspersky Virus Lab for statistical
purposes. No personal information about you or specific information about
your system will be collected or transmitted to Kaspersky Lab.

Select: All, None, Suspicious Selected objects: 0

Scan settings:
Here you can configure the scanning process.

Scan using the following antivirus database:
standard - standard antivirus databases
solution protects you from all viruses, Internet
worms, Trojans and other malicious programs.
extended - this database identifies several
types of ads and related programs and also
contains texts identifying various pornographic
sites: programs that auto-dial porn sites and
programs for auto download of files containing
explicit materials. This option is primarily for
use by experienced users. We do not recommend
this option to beginners or inexperienced users.

Scan options:
Scan Archives - scan files inside archives
Note: affects all targets except 'A
File...' scan target.
Scan Mail Bases - scan e-mails/attachments
inside mail base files
Note: affects all targets except 'My
Email' and 'A File...' scan targets.

Initialize Kaspersky Online Scanner
(downloading and installing Kaspersky Online
Scanner ActiveX from the server into your
computer)

Update Kaspersky Anti-Virus Databases [100%]:
(downloading and installing the latest Kaspersky
Anti-Virus Databases)

Please wait to update the virus definitions...

Unfortunatley you seem to have posted everything that I didn't need! These online scanners are pretty much a gamble whether they work or not, so don't be alarmed or concerned that this scanner didn't work for you, we can simply try another one. A good sign is that this scanner only found a handful of infected files, so we don't have a massive amount of leftover files to delete. I want to try Panda scan next, which should hopefully give us something similar to what Kaspersky gave us, but you should be able to save it. Just note, do this on internet explore, not any other browser.

Please visit Panda Online to carry out a virus scan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
Enter your personal details.
Click the big Scan Now button.
It will ask to install various content - please allow this.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan, which may take a while.
When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
When the scan completes, click the See Report button.
Click Save Report and save the file to your desktop.
Post the contents of the report in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

Also, please clean other Temporary files and Empty the Recycle Bin

We need to purge your infected system restore points.

HI D_TROJANATOR!!!

Where do I start? First of all, my system is beahving better as of yesterday, prior to our last step! Second, you are AWESOME for helping me out. Thank you so much. May I ask some questions and advice please?

First, it is difficult to access my email now (I have a shortcut on my desktop for my outlook) since installing the firewall. However, I like the firewall a lot and I did not choose the email protection option b/c I have AVG running that part. So, first I unlock the firewall, as it is set to lock after 10 minutes idle Internet time, and then wait a second. Still, most times I receive the "Check your internet connection/server" message. I just go tool>>accoounts>>double click the connection>>click ok and close the window, close Outloook and reopen. Sometimes I have to do this three times befor I can access my mail - is there a reason for this?

That is it for the questions!

Advice: Should I get a new computer or just update my CPU? Here is my info: Intell II processor, XP Pro version 2002 with Service pack 2, 398 MHz, 320 MB RAM. I updated from 128 RAM a few years ago - this CPU was new in 1998! So it is very old...Should I update with a new, say 1G hard drive and update to 512 RAM, or just say to heck with it and go for a new machine? The software is the killer! To get all I want, it ups the package price from $600 to $1100 easy.

What do say?

Thanks!!! (More than you know)

Andrea
