Hi Smitch and welcome to the Bleeping Computer forums. My name is Whisperer and I will be helping you with your problem. Although I am experienced with computers, I am currently a Trainee in Malware removal and, as such, ALL of my fixes will be checked by malware experts.

On first glance through your log I note that you are running 2 antivirus programs, the first is Norton’s and the second is Authentium Antivirus. It is most important that you only ever have one antivirus solution running at any one time as they will interact and cause peculiar symptoms, one of which is the symptom that you are experiencing.

'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close'

Please stop one of the antivirus solutions and advise whether this resolves your problem.

You do have an out-of-date Java installation and a couple of resource hogs to cure but I will await an update from you before delving any deeper into a solution and confine my research to checking your log.

I would like you to produce a list of installed programs to assist me in any cleanup.
  • To do this open your HijackThis
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section or Config… button, depending on how you are set up.
    • If you used the Config... option then click the Misc Tools tab
    • Select Open Uninstall Manager , a list of your installed programs will be displayed.
    • Select the Save List… button and save the file to your desktop.
  • Please post a copy of this list and an up-to-date HijackThis log in your reply and advise which Firewall you are using - thankyou
GT

Re: Antivirus - Norton Internet Security came with the PC, but is disabled - I am using NTL Netguard Anti-virus

Re: Firewall(s) - I'm currently using Windows Firewall, but also NTL Netguard firewall.

Many thanks again for your assistance.

Hi Smitch,

Thanks for the logs. I will now complete the analysis and, should there be any malware present, then I will submit my fix for ratification. Back as soon as I can.

Hi Smitch,

You do not appear to have any malware lurking on your computer but I would like you to give me some more information from another source.

Download Silentrunners.zip from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • First you will need to extract the file(s).
    • Right click on the zipped folder and from the new menu click on Extract All
    • In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next
    • Click on Next again.
    • In the final window, click on Finish
    • You should now see the contents of the Silent Runners folder - Silent Runnners.vbs.
  • Double click Silent Runners.vbs to run it.
    IMPORTANT
Some real-time protection programs may warn you of a possibly malicious script being detected when you run Silent Runnners.vbs, allow it to run. Alternatively, disable any script blocking software you have running before you start.
  • You will receive a prompt: Do you want to skip supplementary searches? - click NO
  • Once the All Done! prompt flashes up, open the Startup Program text file that has appeared in the folder and copy & paste it into your next reply.

Hi Smitch,

just taking a break from analysing SilentRunners :flowers:

Do you have the standard Netguard package or is it Netguard Total?

Hi Again,

Just checked again & think it's Netguard total - as I've got anti-spyware also.

Hi Steve,
Nearly there on the SilentRunners and looking good so far.

If you are on the Total package you are either on a 4/10mb package or on the 2mb package and paying an extra 2.99/month or have only been with NTL for less than 30 days, so I guess what I am really saying is...

How long have you been with NTL, what package are you on and (if it is 2mb) are you paying an extra 2.99?

This is important to determine as I can not give definitive advice re your protection without it as I cannot determine which of Netguard's files do what...

Whisperer

HI Whisperer,

I'm definitely on the Total package - been with NTL for a couple of years on 4MB.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sorry for the delay but we have been researching the problem. The good news is that neither log shows any sign of malware and, apart from the 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close' message, you are reporting no other symptoms. The bad news is that I believe that there exists some form of clash between double installations of Firewall/AntiVirus but I can not find enough information about Netguard to assist further. (see footnote)

I can find no files relating to Firewalls so please check your Netguard to ensure that it is switched on and only then action paragraph 2
  • Your Java installation is out of date as the current release is Version 6.
    • Use Internet Explorer and go to this link to update your Java.
    • Scroll down and click the Download button adjacent to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
    • In the new window under Requiredclick to accept the licence agreement, the window will refresh
    • Select the first option, the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-languagelink and follow the instructions
    • Finally use Add or Remove programs to remove J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • As with the Antivirus you must never have more than one firewall active so please switch off the Windows Firewall if you have the Netguard firewall active
    • To do this click Start, point to Settings
    • Click Control Panel, and then double-click Windows Firewall.
    • In the new dialogue box select Off
  • I am sorry that I could not be more definitive on this occasion with my assistance
NOTE: I feel that the problem is the grip that Nortons establishes on any computer, it most certainly is very intolerant of other AntiVirus solutions, and, if you feel that the remaining Norton programs are of no use to you then a complete removal of Nortons could resolve the Generic Host problem and let the Netguard AV have the sole responsibility for your protection. If you need help removing Nortons then please post back with that request.

GT
