Hi everyone,
This computer has had over 1000 items of spyware and many other malware programs.

I am kinda new to this so pls tell me if I'm doing something wrong. I tried to follow a set of instructions I found on this site but may have made a few mistakes. This computer is only using SP1 so didn't have a firewall. I have since installed ZA.

Pls help me with this problem.
Regards,
Andreas

Hello Andreas,

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you.

Since you say your computer was infected by many malware, let's run some scans.

Also, please provide me with a description of the problem you are experiencing.

***************************************************

Please download, update and run (one at a time of course!)
Spybot 1.4 and Adaware SE 1.06.r1

Fix whatever they suggest.

If you need help running these tools, here are some helpful tutorials.
Spybot Tutorial
Adaware SE Tutorial

Be sure to run Adaware SE with a Full Scan in the Safe Mode.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key. If that does not work this go to this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

Ad-Aware SE Setup

***************************************************

Please download A-Squared Free, save it to the desktop.
  • Double-click on a2FreeSetup.exe, follow the installer's instructions.
  • At the end of the install process, make sure Launch a-squared Free is checked, then click Finish.
  • When it launches, it will ask you if you would like to update, click Yes, it will take a few moments to update.
  • When done with the update, if it asks you to restart the application, click Yes.
  • At the main menu, click Scan Now, there will be 4 options, choose Deep Scan.
  • At the end of the scan, click Save Report. Save the report to somewhere convenient, such as your desktop.
  • If malware is found, select all found and click Quarantine selected objects.
***************************************************

I know you may have anti-virus software, but sometimes its definitions are corrupted due to malware. Online scans are the best resort in this case.

Run this pc through the
Trend Micro Housecall Online virus scanner
or
Panda Scan Online virus scanner
or
BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan

Let it delete whatever it finds. Post the Online Scanner log.

***************************************************

Next, reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log, the Online Scanner log.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hello AndreasHagen,

still malware is found

What malware is found?
Where is it found?
What is program is finding it?

Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)

Update your Internet Explorer - Your current version is vulnerable to attacks.
I cannot stress this strong enough.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZNxdm824CFNZ
O16 - DPF: {288C5F13-7E52-4ADA-A32E-F5BF9D125F99} (CR64Loader Object) - http://www.miniclip.com/puzzlepirates/miniclipGameLoader.dll

*******************************************

Next, we're going on a file hunt.
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Don't use the windows start\search feature
Using Windows Explorer, find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files/folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE <==file

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot to the Normal Mode and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hi SifuMike,

Here is the new hijackthis log. I created a test account with admin privlages from which I run hijackthis from and ccleaner. I haven't run ccleaner for the other accounts yet but will do so Sunday.

I also may be wrong about there still being malware -- it's just that when I ran adaware to do a full scan and TrendMicro house call they were unable to remove malware objects and so I thought that they were still there, but maybe they were removed by some of the other tools I installed.

I deleted ALCXMNTR.EXE but What does ALCXMNTR.EXE do and what is it part of?

The system is running still a little slow (thrashing a bit) but I think that's because of the AV/AS tools I installed

Regards,
Andreas

Hi AndreasHagen,

I deleted ALCXMNTR.EXE but What does ALCXMNTR.EXE do and what is it part of?

ALCXMNTR.EXE is Realtek AC97 Audio - Event Monitor. Spyware file used surreptitiously monitor one's actions. It is not a sinister one, like remote control programs, but is being used by Realtek to gather data about customers

The system is running still a little slow (thrashing a bit) but I think that's because of the AV/AS tools I installed

Let's get rid of a few items on your log and see if that helps

In Normal Mode, select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe
(Description: HP monitoring tool. Unnecessary. Remove this to free up some system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
(Description: Intel hotkey applet. Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
(Description: Checks for updates to MS Works. Unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up some system resources. )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
(Description: RealPlayer system tray application. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [S3TRAY2] S3tray2.exe
(Description: S3 configuration taskbar applet. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

Reboot and post a fresh Hijackthis log and I will give it a final check.

Hi SiFuMike,

I don't think I can run CCleaner on all accounts, the user accounts each have a password which I can reset with Admin (as it is not secured) but I don't think they would be too happy if they found out I had reset their passwords. What would you suggest?

Here is my new Hijackthis log:

Andreas

I don't think I can run CCleaner on all accounts, the user accounts each have a password which I can reset with Admin (as it is not secured) but I don't think they would be too happy if they found out I had reset their passwords. What would you suggest?

Ask each user run CCleaner. Warn them at CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Your log looks clean.

Let's reset you files so they are hidden and protected.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect Show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK

Lets clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
