I believe my laptop has some sort of malware infecting it. I scanned it with Spybot search and destroy and ad-aware and they seem to get rid of things but each time i restart my computer, the "your computer is infected" alert shows up every 10 seconds on my task bar. I downloaded and used smitfraudfix on safemode but the alerts keep coming  maybe its not smitfraud?

here is my log

Hi Jennlovespie,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

I think I know what you're dealing with and you're right, it's not Smitfraud. However, I need another scan to confirm my diagnosis.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Warning: Do not click on the Combofix window while the program is running, that may cause it to stall.

After running Combofix, run a fresh HijackThis scan and post that log as well.

Good luck,

Dave

Hi Jennlovespie,

Combofix confirms the diagnosis.

Please do the following steps in order, do not skip any.

First, update your Java. Earlier versions have serious security vulnerabilities. Click Start, Control Panel, then double click Add/Remove Programs. When the list is populated look for any and all entries starting with J2SE or JRE with the little Java icon (a coffee cup). Remove them all, one by one. Then open your browser and go to this web page to get the latest version. Scroll dow to the middle of the page where you will find Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6. Click Download which will take you to the secure download page. At the top, select the Accept License Agreement button. Then look to the first block for the J2SE downloads for the Windows Platform. You can choose either the Online or Offline installation version; unless you have several computers you need to upgrade, I suggest the Online version.

Download the file to your desktop, double click the icon to begin installation, and follow the prompts.

If you have trouble with the Online installation, you can download the big Offline file and install it with your browser closed.

After the installation you will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so.

Next, clear your Java cache:

After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
Downloaded Applications
Other Files

Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Unzip/Extract the contents to your desktop
How to extract (decompress) zipped or compressed files:

http://www.lvsonline.com/compresstut/index.shtml

You will use that program later.

Now, print a copy of the rest of these instructions. Then disconnect your computer from the internet.

Close all windows on your desktop, and also make sure there are no programs showing in your taskbar.

Open HijackThis and run a scan. Place a check mark next to the following lines:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gwiz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe

The Windows Installer line may not exist, that's okay, but do look for it and check if found.

Click Fix checked. Don't reboot yet.

Open Notepad, then copy and paste the text in the Code box into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
"SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"

Press <Enter> to add a blank line.

Save the text file pasted into notepad to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Now open Pocket Killbox by double-clicking the icon. Select the radio button Delete on Reboot, then select the green bar on the right that says All Files. Copy and paste the following lines, one at a time, into the text box:C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntoskrnl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe
C:\winstall.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Annie\rsnyivvc.exe

When all the files have been added, click the red circle with the white X.

Note: Some of these files may not exist. If so they won't show up in blue below the text box an will not be added to the Killbox list. That's okay. Based on your latest HJT log I would expect ntoskrnl.dll and ntsystem.exe would still exist, the other two may be gone.

You will receive a prompt stating that files will be deleted on next reboot. Do you want to reboot now?

Choose Yes when asked if you want to reboot. If your computer does not restart, please reboot it manually.

Once the computer has rebooted, please run fresh scans with Combofix and HijackThis, and post the results to a reply here. Also let me know how your computer is running.

Good luck,

Dave

Hi again,

Good job on the fix, your logs are clean.

I'd like to do a little cleanup, as I see some lines in your HijackThis log with "File missing," namely:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: MUSICMATCH MX Web Player - {d81ca86b-ef63-42af-bee3-4502d9a03c2d} - http://wwws.musicmatch.com/mmz/openWebRadio.html (file missing)

HijackThis may be reporting the file missing in error, but if any of these add-ons is not working, or you simply don't need it, you should fix it with HijackThis. The PartyPoker items I recommend fixing. Online gaming sites are a known source of infections. If you insist on playing poker online be very very careful what you click on.

Then there are these downloaded program files, AKA ActiveX add-ons:

O16 - DPF: {A2E05F45-F127-4092-B9F7-9A02C3E04C77} (HGPlugin7USA Class) - http://gamedownload.ijjimax.com/gamedownlo...GPlugin7USA.cab
O16 - DPF: {BC5E698E-77CF-45EF-80A3-090A4B6AAF83} (HGPlugin8USA Class) - http://gamedownload.ijjimax.com/gamedownlo...GPlugin8USA.cab
O16 - DPF: {CD995117-98E5-4169-9920-6C12D4C0B548} (HGPlugin9USA Class) - http://gamedownload.ijjimax.com/gamedownlo...GPlugin9USA.cab

I did quite a bit of research on these, even submitted the files to Virustotal, a service that scans files with about 20 different antivirus/antimalware programs -- Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, AVG, all of them. One program tagged them as Malware: Dr. Web-Cureit called them "Trojan.downloader." Dr. Web is known for a higher than average rate of false positives. I checked what other helpers were doing, some recommended fixing the entries with HijackThis but most left them alone.

I'm going to leave this up to you. If you know what these files are for and trust the website, then keep them. Otherwise fix them.

Next, a bit of general cleanup:

Let's get rid of temporary files and folders:

Get ATF Cleaner here . It does not require installation, just download it to your desktop.
Double-click the ATFCleaner icon on your desktop to launch the program. For this first run, check the select all box on the main page, then click Empty selected. Then, if you use Firefox or Opera, click on the appropriate tab and repeat the same drill.

Finally, as a double-check, I would like you to go to the Kaspersky online scanner. Accept the terms, let it install an ActiveX program (since you have XP SP2 this is blocked by default, you must allow it), then accept the terms again, let it download the files (about 8 MB total). Click Next, and select "My Computer" as the scan area. Kaspersky takes a long time but it is very thorough. When it is finished, save the report as a text file (easier to work with than an HTML file) to your desktop.

Post the Kaspersky log along with a new HijackThis log to your next reply.

thanks so much. could you tell me exactly what happened?

You're welcome. Truth time: no, I couldn't. I don't know where you picked up the infection. It's a trojan, you can read about it here:

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusin...s.aspx?id=58686

Trojans don't replicate themselves, you have to click on something to activate them. What were you doing at 11:59 AM on December 26? According to the first Combofix log, that's when ntsystem.exe (one of the infection files) was created on your hard drive.

Anyway, run the scans and post the logs. If they look good I think we can wrap this up.

Dave

Hi again Jennlovespie,

Kaspersky says you're clean. All the "bad guys" detected are in quarantine locations or in your system restore files, which we will get to next.

Go ahead and delete those files Kaspersky found in the Killbox folder, then empty your recycle bin. Also you can delete that Trojan in your Norton Quarantine.

Now you need to Flush and Reset your System Restore files. For this I refer you to this tutorial:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-xp-system-restore-guide/

Finally, please read and implement the recommendations found here.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/keep-your-computer-safe-online/

Please pay special attention to the advice about implementing a firewall. I assume you have the Windows XP firewall in place, but one of the two-way firewalls recommended in that tutorial would be better.

To the advice presented in the tutorial I would add: Use caution when you surf. Popup ads, even on a trusted website, are the real time equivalent of unsolicited e-mail. Investigate free software carefully before you download it. Avoid peer-to-peer file sharing and any kind of illegal website, including gaming.

Your case involved some recent, difficult-to-detect malware. It is possible, in spite of the clean bill of health that your computer now enjoys, that something is still lurking on your machine. Please update your antivirus and antispyware frequently and run them in full system mode. Be sure to use SpywareBlaster as an adjuct to your real-time programs and scanners. Also use ATFCleaner frequently to clean your caches and temporary files.

If you see any problems, post back immediately. I will leave this topic open for a couple of weeks. If all is well after another week or ten days, please do me the favor of posting back to let me know that the fix has "held."

Good luck,

Dave
