I am hoping one of you geniuses (I am *not* using this sarcastically!!!!) are able to help me. I downloaded IE7 and it was working okay for a while. Now, whenever I try to load it, it just sits there with a blank screen (meanwhile, Firefox is fine). I use a wireless connection at my university.

On top of that, my startup on my laptop is REALLY slow...and more and more often, for some reason, the sound is simply turned off and cannot be enabled again. I periodically run Spybot and have Norton Anti-virus installed, though I must admit it is a few months out of date becuase my subscription ran out.

Nonetheless, here is my hijackthis log file:

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
Let's see what we can turn up.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Okay, I ran it. I was not clear about which text file you wanted to see, but from the look of this one, I assume it is right. Just let me know. Also, I was able to do one thing: I uninstalled IE7 and things have improved. However, I have deep suspicions about my computer, so I think this should still be a great help if you can find anything. THANKS!!!

I don't see anything that concerns me in that log. Let's run a good antivirus scan and see if anything turns up.

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner

Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Follow the Instruction on the F-Secure page for proper installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Arrrgh! I started to run it once, but unfortunately I was only on battery power, so it conked out before it would complete. Now, I keep trying to go back to the site and everything starts to load, then it prepares to scan the system. I tthen says "Error, please close you browser and scanner(Id:24)" and thats all Ic an do.

Again, things are a bit better now that I got Norton WinDoctor to clean out my registry and I reverted back to the earlier version of Explorer. Maybe I have the Microsoft virus

I will keep trying to do that online scan; any other ideas? Thanks for your help.

Rob

I see in your log that you are running both Norton and AVG antivirus. This will cause problems if you continue to run them both at the same time. You should uninstall one of them completely so that you are only running one antivirus program at a time.

Once you do that, let me know if your computer still seems abnormally slow and we'll dig around some more.
