Network Problem – Goes up and down:

Dell 8100, Pentium 4 1.5 Ghz, 1.25 MB Memory
Windows XP Professional, SP2 and all updates through Dec 2006
Zone Alarm Security Suite 6.5.737 with all program, virus and spyware updates through 29 Dec 06

Problem: The network appears to go up and down at 5-10 second intervals. This problem stared a couple weeks ago but I can not connect it to any changes on this computer.

Symptoms:

1.If you start a download or view a large web page, network traffic will transfer for several seconds and then the network will hang. After several seconds in this state, it will come back to life and then repeat the problem.
2.If you ping this computer from another computer, several pings will be returned and then several will time out. This symptom will repeat.
3.If you connect to a shared folder on this computer from another computer, you will have intermittent access to the shared folder.
4.If the network is hung (as in 1-3) and you start a new program that attempts network connections, then the network will “wake-up” for a few seconds.
5.If you start a continuous ping (ping -t secondhost) from this computer to another computer, the network does not appear to hang. Is the ping function a new connection to the network each ping?

Attempted fixes/diagnostics:

1.I have unloaded all startup applications, including Zone Alarm Security Suite, and the problem still exist.
2.I have virus and spyware scanned with Zone Alarm
3.I have spyware scanned with SpyBot 1.4 (latest updates)
4.The problem appears to still exist after reboot to Safe Mode with Networking

Output from System Information.

I see you have a 3Com 3c905cTX card? What other network devices are your connected to (Modem, router, wifi card,..)?

Make sure you don't have two firewalls running.

Make sure you don't have two anti virus programs running.

Once that is done, turn off the firewalls and test. If still a problem:

Turn off your anti virus program and test. If still a problem:

Remove this computer from your router and plug the modem directly into it. This will eliminate the router. If it now works correctly you will know that the router has an issue.

Perhaps another way to test the router would be to switch router ports with another computer on your network. Actually unplug this computer and another one at the router and then plug them into each other's old port in the router. See if the other computer now has the issue.

Those are the first things that come to mind to start tracking this down.

The 3c905ctx is actually built into the Dell 8100 motherboard

I have a Motorola SM56 Fax Modem but it does not appear to be activating (dialing out).

I have already tried the first four suggestions with no change in the symptoms.

I have two other computers sharing the Firewall/Router (BEFSX41) and they are not demonstrating any network problems.

I swapped router ports for the Dell computer and it had no effect.

Thanks for you help!

I realize you said that you think this computer is clean of malware, but I would investigate this further. I suggest using a trusted on line scanner such as the one found at:

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Use the on line scanner, not the file scanner. Scan your computer and see what it finds.

No one anti virus can find everything. Plus the fact that some malware will attempt to disable your anti virus. It is possible that your protection has missed something.

I just think at this point you need to be SURE that this computer is malware free before looking deeper.

I used the suggested scanner and it did not find any problems.

Do you have any further suggestions?

Do you think it could be a problem with my network adapter? I will try to run the hardware diagnostics to see if they show anything.

Network adapter and cable are the two things left, in terms of hardware.

I have run the hardware diagnostics on the network adapter - no problems indicated

I swapped locations between the subject computer and another computer on the firewall/router. This essentially swapped router ports and all interconnecting cabling. The problem followed the subject computer. I believe that this eliminates the hardware.

I have done the basic "Repair" on the network connection as well as restored the base TCP/IP files with a "netsh int ip reset". Neither of these helped the problem.

Is there a way to monitor the basic network services to see if one is crashing and restarting or hanging?

Is there a way to restore the networking components (drivers/services) that does not require rebuilding the OS?

Download and install this driver:

Then reboot and test.
